Dear Future Self...
I’m 18 years old and am writing this letter to you in May 2021 as a requirement for my
English class this semester at Independence High School in Brambleton, VA. I am a senior and
am busy with school work, getting ready for college and applying for scholarships. My favorite
classes are Math and Government. My extracurricular activities include playing guitar and clubs.
Next year I hope to have fun and do well in college .

The thing I will remember most about my first semester at Independence is online school.
The person I will not forget from my first few months at Independence is Zack because he is a
cool guy. I also will never forget about the pandemic and .

The thing I will remember most about my last semester at Independence is the agony of
doing all the school work. The person I will not forget from my last few months at Independence
is also Zack because he is still a cool guy. I also will never forget about the insurmountable pile
of work I received over the last month of my senior year during a pandemic and that one
beaver.

The thing I was happiest about was getting into college because it means I won’t starve.

How I passed
the time...
Books / News Articles / Comics:
In 2021 the cost of gas was ~$3.00. The cost of my favorite meal at Taco
Bell was $7.59. My favorite album that came out in 2020 – 2021 was -!- by Dead Poet
Society. My favorite actor/actress is no one because i don't really care about
celebrities. My favorite movie that came out in 2020 – 2021 is TENET. Other popular
movies that came out around this time were: Nobody, Sonic, and Bill and Ted face
the music. The term or “it” phrase that my friends and I used the most was pog.
Among my friends, I’m known as because.

In 2021, the style for teenagers could be said to have been wearing whatever you
want. It was common to see shirts, pants, and shoes when walking down the halls at
school. I usually get to school by computer. After school, I do homework, play video
games, and stare into the void. For fun, I like to play video games. My hobbies are
playing guitar, playing video games, and spending money. My favorite sport and/or
sports teams are (i don't watch sports).

Oh, and another thing . . .
I have pets—a dog named Yoshi and a dog named Peach.... The latest technology this year is
5G; the gadget that I cannot live without is my phone. My favorite vacation was to Peru with my
family when I was like 17.

A few major events that happened this year include:

● The global freaking pandemic

● The insurrection at the Capitol

My goal for the future is to become some kind of doctor. My hope for the future is that things
turn out alright. I always want to remember that one beaver.

My advice for my future self is to try new things and never forget to brush your teeth. These are
my dreams and hope for you and the future!

Sincerely,

Jacob

Hi Mr. Palmer! I pulled out my scrapbook from your class to find my
personal statement for a nursing school application, and as I was looking
through it I read the letter to myself. I guess 18 year old me was psychic
or something because it was spot on and exactly what I needed to hear
at this point in my life. So I just wanted to take a second and say thank
you for assigning that because it ended up being incredibly helpful.
-Christie

Palmer’s Response: That is fantastic! That makes me so happy!

I’m glad it was helpful and something you can cherish.

Christie: It really is!! So whenever someone complains, they’ll thank you

later!
