Dear Future Self...
I’m 17 years old and am writing this letter to you in May 2021 as a requirement for my
English class this semester at Independence High School in Brambleton, VA. I am a senior and
am busy with going to NOVA, working at Harris Teeter and getting into luthiership, and trying to
get back into working out after leaving ABA. My favorite classes are De English and AP
Environmental. My extracurricular activities include playing Guitar, working out (formerly), and
just doing whatever else to make life a little more interesting. Next year I hope to be enrolled
in my NOVA courses and setting up the custom shop–undisclosed business venture.

The thing I will remember most about my first semester at Independence is the fact
that I’ve spent probably 90% of my time this quarantine on my bed as its my study area, my
recreational area, and my… well my bed. The person I will not forget from my first few months
at Independence is Mr Palmer because he’s the teacher everyone likes–me included. I also will
never forget about the fact that this year’s AP Comp Sci Test was revolting and how I most
likely failed it.

The thing I was happiest about was knowing i’d be free after this year because after four
years doing the same thing over and over again, I was looking forward to change my lifestyle.

In 2021 the cost of gas was 3 pergallon . The cost of my favorite meal at
Bonchon korean fried chicken was 35. My favorite album that came out in 2020 –
2021 was nothing, because all my favorite artists decide to take quarantine off. My
favorite actor/actress is no one because i dont really watch movies much. My favorite
movie that came out in 2020 – 2021 is Tenet. Other popular movies that came out
around this time were: Godzilla vs Kong, Invisible Man, and Birds of Prey. The term
or “it” phrase that my friends and I used the most was asmogus. Among my friends,
I’m known as Keith because that’s my name.

In 2021, the style for teenagers could be said to have been something I wouldnt
know since we were inside all year. It was common to see masks, and more masks
when walking down the halls at school. I usually get to school by waking up and
rolling over to my laptop. After school, I play some guitar, listen to music, and worth
on build projects. For fun, I like to play guitar, build them, and listen to music (yeah i
know my year was pretty uneventful). My hobbies are working out, playing guitar,
and woodworking. My favorite sport is Boxing, although I havent been to the ABA
gym in months due to my hiatus.

Oh, and another thing . . .
I have pets—a dead mouse Doris and another one named Morris, both passed away in 2013,
that I got when I was 12.... The latest technology this year is the GTX 3090 GPU or something;
the gadget that I cannot live without is my phone–pretty typical for a gen z person. My favorite
vacation was to San Francisco with my godmother when I was 10.

A few major events that happened this year include: The coronavirus, spending the most
amount of money i’ve ever spent in one transaction on a guitar

My goal for the future is to hand wind electric guitar coiled pickups and sell them for
good profit as a side hustle.

My advice for my future self is to keep trying to find sources of passive income and never forget to
use a bidet. These are my dreams and hope for you and the future!

Sincerely, Keith Tran

Hi Mr. Palmer! I pulled out my scrapbook from your class to find my
personal statement for a nursing school application, and as I was looking
through it I read the letter to myself. I guess 18 year old me was psychic
or something because it was spot on and exactly what I needed to hear
at this point in my life. So I just wanted to take a second and say thank
you for assigning that because it ended up being incredibly helpful.
-Christie

Palmer’s Response: That is fantastic! That makes me so happy!

I’m glad it was helpful and something you can cherish.

Christie: It really is!! So whenever someone complains, they’ll thank you

later!
