Dear Future Self...
I’m 18 years old and am writing this letter to you in May 2021 as a requirement for my
English class this semester at Independence High School in Brambleton, VA. I am a senior and
am busy with college checklists, finishing assignments and working out. My favorite classes are
ISR and DE Gov. My extracurricular activities include Lacrosse and Valorant. Next year I hope
to crush freshman year and decide on a career track.

The thing I will remember most about my first semester at Independence is the sense
of community and familiarity. The person I will not forget from my first few months at
Independence is Mr. Saavedra because he’s a “for lifer”. I also will never forget about school
spirit and sports.

The thing I will remember most about my last semester at Independence is being tired. The
person I will not forget from my last few months at Independence is Mr. Avalos because calculus
is busy this time of year. I also will never forget about Mr. Kim and Dr. Miller.

The thing I was happiest about was early release because I could leave early.
Video Games / Working Out / Crafts: Music / TikTok:
● Played CS:GO, Valorant, and other FPS games ● Listened to more and more
● Started working out more seriously and frequently due to genres of music to broaden
quarantine my taste
● Briefly became a Tik Tok star
before deleting the app

Film / TV / YouTube:
How I passed
the time...
● Began binging shows I
had never watched
before such as FMA,
Naruto, and classic
movies like Dazed and
Confused or the
Godfather
Books / News Articles / Comics:
Started paying attention to news articles and becoming more
aware of important political events in the world
In 2021 the cost of gas was $3.015. The cost of my favorite meal at Blue
Ridge Grill was $16. My favorite album that came out in 2020 – 2021 was Eternal
Atake by Lil Uzi Vert. My favorite actor/actress is Tom Holland because he looks like
me. My favorite movie that came out in 2020 – 2021 is Demon Slayer: Mugen Train.
Other popular movies that came out around this time were: Justice League Snyder
Cut, Godzilla v. Kong, and Army of the Dead. The term or “it” phrase that my friends
and I used the most was “bussin’”. Among my friends, I’m known as Patrick because
that’s my name.

In 2021, the style for teenagers could be said to have been casual and high end.
It was common to see upscale brands, joggers, and sweatshirts when walking down
the halls at school. I usually get to school by car. After school, I exercise, study, and
procrastinate. For fun, I like to hang out with friends. My hobbies are Lacrosse,
gaming, and drinking water. My favorite sport and/or sports teams are WFT.
Insert a picture that you have taken that
truly represents this time in your life?
Oh, and another thing . . .
I have pets—N/A named ______________ that I got when I was _________, a ________
named __________________.... The latest technology this year is iPhone 12; the gadget that I
cannot live without is my iPhone. My favorite vacation was to Spain with my family when I was 7.

A few major events that happened this year include: Covid-19, 2020 election, Superbowl
Brady

My goal for the future is to become wealthy. My hope for the future is that I am
successful in my college endeavors. I always want to remember to keep moving forward.

My advice for my future self is to just do it and never forget to appreciate the time. These are
my dreams and hope for you and the future!

Sincerely, Patrick Hardy

Hi Mr. Palmer! I pulled out my scrapbook from your class to find my
personal statement for a nursing school application, and as I was looking
through it I read the letter to myself. I guess 18 year old me was psychic
or something because it was spot on and exactly what I needed to hear
at this point in my life. So I just wanted to take a second and say thank
you for assigning that because it ended up being incredibly helpful.
-Christie

Palmer’s Response: That is fantastic! That makes me so happy!

I’m glad it was helpful and something you can cherish.

Christie: It really is!! So whenever someone complains, they’ll thank you

later!
