Dear Future Self...
I’m 18 years old and am writing this letter to you in May 2021 as a requirement for my
English class this semester at Independence High School in Brambleton, VA. I am a senior and
am busy with homework, filling out scholarships and working out. My favorite classes are
weight training and DE Government. My extracurricular activity includes cheerleading. Next
year I hope to get on the honors list for college and train to be a UGA cheerleader my
sophomore year.

The thing I will remember most about my first semester at Independence fall sports season
combined with homecoming festivities. The person I will not forget from my first few months at
Independence is Mr. Gabriel because he made everyone excited to be at Independence. I also
will never forget about my 2020 cheer team and friends.

The thing I will remember most about my last semester at Independence is the
senior/graduation festivities. The person I will not forget from my last few months at
Independence is my 2021 cheer team because of the memories we made and goals that we
were able to accomplish. I also will never forget about my best friends and teachers.

The thing I was happiest about was winning states because it was something I always
wanted to do.

● Recently I have been more interested in news articles
regarding politics because I feel that it is affecting my life
more and I want to stay informed on what is going on.
In 2021 the cost of gas was and average of $2.71. The cost of my favorite
meal at Cava was $11.00. My favorite album that came out in 2020 – 2021 was
Tickets to My Downfall by Machine Gun Kelly. My favorite actor/actress is Blake Lively
because she is very classy and seems very real and pure despite her celebrity status.
My favorite movie that came out in 2020 – 2021 is After We Collided. Other popular
movies that came out around this time were: Frozen II, Bad Boys For Life, and
Wonder Woman 1984. The term or “it” phrase that my friends and I used the most
was “dank.” Among my friends, I’m known as “aruba girl” because I used to travel to
Aruba a lot.

In 2021, the style for teenagers could be said to have been very street-style. It
was common to see biker shorts, nike blazers, and cropped t-shirts when walking
down the halls at school. I usually get to school by car. After school, I do homework,
go to practice/workout, and hang out with my friends. For fun, I like to hang out with
my friends. My hobbies are working out, playing volleyball with my friends, and
spending time with friends and family. My favorite sport and/or sports teams are
Washington Football Team and UGA Bulldogs.

Oh, and another thing . . .
I have pets—a pug named Kobe that I got when I was five years old, and a boxer-lab mix
named Tyson. The latest technology this year is Virtual Reality; the gadget that I cannot live
without is my phone. My favorite vacation was to Aruba with my family and family friends when I
was a sophomore in high school.

A few major events that happened this year include:

● My cheer team winning states

● Graduating from high school
● Getting into college

My goal for the future is to be happy with my life. My hope for the future that I am
successful in all aspects of my life (family, friends, and job.) I always want to remember that
happiness is not how much you have but how much we enjoy what we have.

My advice for my future self is to follow my dreams and depend on myself and never forget to be
grateful for what I have. These are my dreams and hope for you and the future!

Sincerely, Allison Medina

Hi Mr. Palmer! I pulled out my scrapbook from your class to find my
personal statement for a nursing school application, and as I was looking
through it I read the letter to myself. I guess 18 year old me was psychic
or something because it was spot on and exactly what I needed to hear
at this point in my life. So I just wanted to take a second and say thank
you for assigning that because it ended up being incredibly helpful.
-Christie

Palmer’s Response: That is fantastic! That makes me so happy!

I’m glad it was helpful and something you can cherish.

Christie: It really is!! So whenever someone complains, they’ll thank you

later!
