Modal Verbs for Speculation, Strange but True

1) Find an attached PDF file.

2) Read the stories in the file and speculate on what might have happened in each of

them. The stories are all true.

3) Use must/can't have with ideas you feel confident are correct, and could/may/ might

have with ideas you feel less confident about. Be imaginative and use as many scenarios

as possible.

1. This man, Anthony Kenneth Mastrogiovanni, must have impersonated a police

officer, but got caught when he tried to pull over an actual police officer.

2. The two women had the same social security number because one of the women

could have falsified the number to obtain benefits at the expense of the other

one. Otherwise, there could have been a system error on the part of the United

States government.

3. I think the house was burgled because the thief must have seen the selfie of the

owner of the house with his family and many valuable elements behind them,

such as original paintings, money, gold decorations, among others.

4. I think this man may have survived the cold weather because his body's natural

survival instincts kicked in, causing the Japanese to fall into a similar state of

hibernation.

5. I think the bees produced blue and green honey because they must have been

inhaling some toxic substance that caused the color change.

6. The policeman could not catch the burglary suspect because he could have

noticed he was being pursued, so he fled.
