When do we use the present perfect and when do we use the past simple?!

“I’ve been to India. It was an amazing experience! I spent 2 months travelling around the
southern part of the country. We got trains everywhere and stayed in really cheap hotels.
The food was incredible and also extremely cheap - I loved it and can’t wait to go back one
day!”

RULE 1:
TELLING A STORY ABOUT A PAST EXPERIENCE. START WITH PRESENT PERFECT
(WITH NO SPECIFIC TIME). THEN USE PAST SIMPLE TO GIVE DETAILS OF THE
STORY.
RULE 2: When you give a specific time in the past, you MUST use the past simple.
I went to India in 2012. NOT! “I’ve been to India in 2012.”

ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT PAST EXPERIENCES ARE USUALLY IN THE PRESENT


PERFECT. THE ANSWER CAN BE IN THE PRESENT PERFECT OR PAST SIMPLE.
Have you ever been to India?
- Yeah, I have! / Yeah, I have been to India.
- Yeah, I went in 2012. It was amazing.

“Coronavirus has been with us now for a whole year!!”


RULE 3:
IT’S STILL CONTINUING. IT STARTED IN THE PAST AND IS STILL HAPPENING. USE
THE PRESENT PERFECT.
I’ve made some coffee, do you want some? (There is still coffee in the pot)
I made a cake. It was delicious. (I ate the cake. It’s finished. No more cake)

Donald Trump was the President of the USA.


RULE 4:
Past simple when the action has finished.
We had our lessons in the classroom.
