Machining Time and Power Estimation :-

1. Cutting speed in turning is the surface speed of the workpiece :-

V = pi x D x N / 100

Value of speed ( rpm ) can also be obtained from the above equation, however speeds available on the
lathe machine may not match the analytical value obtained. Hence adjustment to the value obtained
becomes necessary.

2. Time for a single pass is given by -

t = L + L0 / ( f N )

L = Length of the job.(mm)

L0 = Over travel of the tool beyond the length of the job to help in the setting of the tool. (mm)

f = Feed Rate ( mm/rev )

Over travel depends on the operator's choice but usually it is kept 2 to 3 mm on either side.

There are two types of lathe passes -

1. Roughing Passes

2. Finishing Passes ( For obtaining tight tolerances )

Roughing passes , Pr = A - Af / dr

A = Total Machining Allowance

Af = Finish Machining allowance

dr = Depth of the cut in roughing

Value calculated from the above equation is rounded to nearest integer -

Pf = A f / d f

df = Depth of the cut in Finishing. Mm

Cutting Force depends on depth of the cut and feed rate.

Cutting Force, F = K x d x f, where K is the proportional constant given in N/mm 2

Then, power = F x V, where V is the cutting speed or surface speed.

Combining above two equations, P = K x d x f x V
