ORIENT AIRFIELD
STANARD OPERATING PROCEDURES AIRSPACE
S.O.P AIRSPACE version 2 DATE 31-1-14

SECTION 1.
GENERAL

All gliders must be equipped with serviceable radios for each flight.

Standard Radio Procedures must be used.

Orient Airfield has a GLIDING WINDOW; this window is depicted in section 3.

When operating within 3 NM of Orient Airfield BELOW FL105, use 123.4MHz.

When operating in the Magaliesburg Gliding Window (i.e. above FL105), use 123.6 MHz.

Outside of the Gliding Window in class G airspace ,as stipulated in the SA-IAIP, all aircraft below 1
500' AGL shall operate on frequency 124,8 MHz and traffic above 1 500' AGL shall operate on the
appropriate frequency as published in the SA IAIP.

Any glider operating within 10 NM of controlled airspace outside the lateral limits of the Orient Gliding
Window must establish radio contact with the appropriate ATSU.

Only gliders with serviceable Mode C transponders, capable of maintaining two-way VHF
communication with the appropriate ATSU, and having filed a flight plan, will be allowed inside
controlled airspace.

All gliders must contact the relevant ATSU at least ten minutes before CROSSING AIRWAYS.

SECTION 2
GLIDING WINDOW OPPERATION

When the GLIDER WINDOW is to be opened, JHB ATC must be given the contact number of the
responsible person who will remain on the airfield, even on weekdays, with appropriate and functional
radio equipment at hand so that in the event of JHB ATC wishing to close the window, he can contact
aircraft in the window and instruct them to vacate the airspace. All gliders must vacate the window
within 20 minutes of the advice from ATC.

The Orient Gliding Window can be opened to either FL145 or FL185 from 0800hrs to sunset.

Gliders operating in the Orient Window (i.e. above FL105) are to change to and operate on 123.6MHz.

Gliders operating in the opened window MUST acknowledge any call to vacate the window and
CONFIRM when having done so.

When the GLIDER WINDOW is NOT open gliders, are to remain below FL105, unless they are
transponder equipped and have filed a flight plan.

Gliders returning into the Orient Gliding Window must establish that the window is still open by
requesting the status of the Window on 123.6MHz or 123.4MHz.
Should the returning glider not find conformation that the Window is still open on these glider
frequencies, they should establish contact with ACC on 126.7MHz.
If the window is closed they may enter the Window at FL125 on the decent into Orient with the proviso
that they do not climb again until they have descended below FL105 and do not climb above FL105.
