APU START

NOTES
• CPG will check internal communications with opposite crewmember and ground crewmember(s).
• PLT will announce auxiliary power unit (APU) start.
• To prevent heat damage to the System Processor (SP), the APU must be started within one minute of
the initiation of battery operations when FAT is > 43 °C, within three minutes when FAT is between 32
°C and 43 °C, and within 20 minutes when FAT is < 32 °C.
• To prevent injury to personnel, ensure pylons/stabilator are clear prior to starting APU.
• APU may be started at any time when the aircraft is on the ground.
• The checklist is designed for most checks to be performed with a degree of PLT/CPG independence.
• During the checks, overall crew awareness is fostered by periodic progress queries directed by each
crewmember to the opposite crewmember.
• The fire detector test should be a cooperative check between the PLT & CPG.
• It is not necessary to allow the entire warning audio to play before initiating the position #2 test.

NOTES
• After the auxiliary power unit (APU) is started, the CPG will alert the PLT when he is ready to begin the
weapons system check in accordance with the TM 1-1520- 251-CL.
• PLT will acknowledge the CPG and will announce that he is ready to continue with the WEAPONS OP
CHECKS or will coordinate otherwise.
• IHADSS BORESIGHT, NVS OP, TADS & FCR CHECKS may be performed in any order.

BEFORE ENGINES START

NOTES
• Air taxi is the preferred method for helicopter ground movements at airports, provided ground
operations and conditions permit. Unless otherwise requested or instructed, pilots are expected to
remain below 100 feet AGL.
• Excessive cyclic displacement with low power settings will result in droop stop pounding.
• If forward cyclic inputs appear excessive while taxiing, increase collective as necessary. Appropriate
collective setting is a function of cyclic displacement and surface conditions.
• Use power as required to prevent excessive forward cyclic application and to reduce the possibility of
damaging the main rotor strap pack assembly. Taxiing with an external tank requires a level fuselage
due to a decreased ground clearance of only 6 to 8 inches, depending on fuel load, struts, and tire
servicing. Slower than normal taxi speed is desirable with the decreased ground clearance.
• P* will announce when the aircraft is clear, his intent to begin ground taxi operations, and the
intended direction of turn before turning.
• P* will remain focused outside the aircraft. Prior to initial taxi, the P* should direct the pilot not on the
controls (P) to call out the before taxi check.
• P* will announce “braking” when he intends to apply brake pressure. The P* will direct the P to assist
in clearing the aircraft during the checks.
• P will announce “guarding” to acknowledge the P*’s announcement of braking
• P will call out the taxi check when directed. P will assist in clearing the aircraft and will provide
adequate warning to avoid obstacles. P will announce when his attention is focused inside the cockpit.
BEFORE TAKEOFF

NOTES
• Perform a power check near the takeoff point and in the direction of takeoff.
• P* will announce his intent to perform a hover power check and will remain focused outside the
aircraft.
• P* will announce his intentions to use the hold modes during the maneuver and he will announce
when he terminates the maneuver.
• P* will announce the type of takeoff and whether the takeoff is from the ground or from a hover and
his intent to abort or alter the takeoff.
VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS TAKEOFF (VMC)
• P* selects the FLT & ENG pages.
• P* maintains takeoff heading ±10 degrees below 50 feet or until clear of the obstacles, or minimum
power takeoff until through effective translational lift (ETL) at around 90 ktas.
• P* maintains ground track alignment with the takeoff direction.
• P* maintains the aircraft in trim above 50 feet above ground level (AGL) or as appropriate for
obstacle avoidance.
• P* maintains accelerate to desired airspeed ±10 knots.
• P* applies takeoff power, not to exceed maximum (MAX) torque (%Q) available for the selected
takeoff, until reaching desired altitude, minimum single engine airspeed, or as conditions permit.
• P will announce when ready for takeoff.
• P will remain focused primarily outside the aircraft to assist in clearing the aircraft and to provide
adequate warning of obstacles.
• P will announce when his attention is focused inside the cockpit.
• P will select reference points to assist in maintaining the takeoff flight path.
• P will monitor power requirements and advise the P* if power limits are being approached.
INSTRUMENT METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS TAKEOFF (IMC)
• P* selects the FLT & TSD pages.
• P* maintains required takeoff power.
• P* maintains accelerative climb attitude ±2 bar width.
• P* maintains the aircraft in trim after effective transitional lift (ETL).
• P* maintains an appropriate rate of climb ±200 feet per minute (FPM).
• P will announce when ready for takeoff and will remain focused outside the aircraft to assist in
clearing during the VMC portion of the maneuver and to provide adequate warning of obstacles.
• P will announce when his attention is focused inside the cockpit (for example, when interfacing with
the communication or navigation system).
• Prior to the aircraft entering actual IMC, P will select and maintain the flight page and will monitor
and assist in establishing coordinated flight within aircraft operating limits.
BEFORE LANDING

NOTES
VISUAL METEROLOGICAL CONDITIONS APPROACH (VMC)
• P* will maintain a constant approach angle to the desired point of termination (hover or touchdown) with
deviations for surface conditions or obstacles at the point of termination.
• P* will maintain ground track alignment with the landing direction with minimum drift.
• P* will maintain rate of closure appropriate for the conditions.
• P* will align the aircraft with landing direction below 50 feet or as appropriate for obstacle avoidance.
• P* will perform a smooth and controlled termination to a hover or to the ground at the intended point of
touchdown.
• P* will remain focused outside the aircraft throughout the approach and landing.
• P* will announce his intent to perform a roll-on landing, the intended point of landing, and any deviation
from the approach. He will announce if the manual stabilator is being used as well as the method of
braking : “aerodynamic braking” and/or “braking.”
• P will confirm suitability of the area, assist in clearing the aircraft, and provide adequate warning of traffic
or obstacles.
• P will acknowledge the use of the manual stabilator, the method of braking, and any intent to deviate
from the approach.
• The P will announce when his attention is focused inside the cockpit.
INSTRUMENT METEROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PRECISION APPROACH (IMC)
1. P* will perform the approach per AR 95-1, FM 1-240, and the DOD FLIP.
2. P* will maintain heading ±5 degrees.
3. P* will make immediate heading and altitude corrections issued by air traffic control (ATC).
4. P* will comply with the decision height prescribed for the approach.
5. P* will execute the correct missed approach procedure.
6. P will perform duties as directed by the P*.
7. P will call out the approach procedure to the P* and will acknowledge any unannounced deviations.
8. P will monitor outside for visual contact with the landing environment.
9. P will complete the approach when visual meteorological conditions (VMC) are encountered.
10. P will announce when his attention is focused inside the cockpit.

AFTER LANDING
