CASE STUDY
CHAPTER 7: ORIENTATION AND TRAINING OFFICE PERSONNEL
JACKMAN ELECTRIC COMPANY

The Jackman Electric Company is currently revamping certain aspects of its training program.
One of the more important changes that will likely occur is in the type of training techniques
that will be implemented. In the present program, the lecture method is widely used. On-the-
job coaching has been strongly endorsed by several supervisors, although no final decision
has been made yet.

You were recently appointed by the company’s president to chair a committee examining the
effectiveness of the current program and to make recommendations regarding needed
changes.

Besides that, you are required to prepare an orientation to the new employees that will be
working in the company very soon. While the final decision about the training techniques to
be used is the responsibility of top management and you need to prepare the orientation, you
decide to include in written report the following information:

1. How your committee assessed the desirability of the various training techniques it
considered as possibilities.

2. A presentation of the advantages and disadvantages of the on-the-job coaching method,

especially in comparison with the lecture method.

3. Based on your study, what is the best training technique to apply in the company?
