Title: Macro examination and preservation of specimen using mounting press machine.
Department of Mechanical Engineering, UET Peshawar, Jalozai campus.
Introduction:

Objectives The objective of this experiment is to preserve the specimen in Backlite or Acryl
powder using mounting press machine so that it can be easily handled during
polishing & grinding operation.

Equipment/ It is the machine used to preserve the specimen. The powder used is backlite or
Apparatus Acryl. The machine used consists of 2 parts,
Description Hydraulic unit and Moulding unit

Theoretical Theoretical Background:Mounting press is used to preserve the specimen in

Background backlite or acryl powder. It is also used to hold the specimen easily.
Units: It has two unit. Hydraulic and Mould unit.
Hydraulic unit: In this system pressure is applied on the mould with help of
jack. The jack contains the handle for applying pressure.it has following parts
Pressure release valve: When we apply pressure on the mould to release the
pressure, the mounting press contains a pressure valve.
Pressure gauge: It used to show pressure on a device.
Column and cross beam head: The mounting press has two columns over the
mould unit. These columns support a cross beam head. The beam has a screw
tight lever. The lever is used to compress the spaces over the mould.
Mould Unit: The part of the mounting press which mould is to be made is
known as mould unit. It has following parts.
Mould cylinder: It is the cylinder which is to be placed in hole and mounting
press. The backlite powder is poured on the mould cylinder and with the help of
hand pump it is moved up.
Mould plug or spacer: The mould of specimen we need a small cavity over it,
for making of this cavity we use plug or spacer over backlite powder.
Thermostat: It regulates heat for any situation.in this case we need to fix a
specific temperature for moulding press.
Timer:To make a good type of mold a specific time is required, and time is
specified through timer.
Clock Alarm: When the specified time given to the timer is completed. The
clock alarm starts.
Cooling system: For moulding a specimen, we give heat due to which the mould
unit become hot to make it cool we use water.

Procedure 1. Take out the plunger by moving the jack in upward direction.
2. Oil the plunger so that it can easily move up and down in cylinder.
3. Placed the specimen on the plunger in cylinder such that the surface to be
examined is placed downward.
4. Bring the plunger down by moving the jack downward.
5. Then pour the backlite on the head of mould cylinder including the specimen.
it is poured so that the specimen cannot touch and damage the mould plug.
6. After that place a spacer or plug on the backlite powder.
7. Close the gross head beam and close the screw over the spacer.
8. Apply pressure on the specimen by Jack. The pressure can be read from
pressure gauge it may be 130 to 160
9. Turn on the heating coil to heat up the powder.
10. Set the thermostat to 170 degree.
11. Set the timer to 6-9 minutes.
12. When the time is completed the clock will start indicating the completion of
mould.
13. During heating the pressure gradually decreases so pressure is maintained to
required level with the help of jack.
14. When the clock alarm starts turn on the cooling system
15. After cooling open the pressure release valve and open the gross head beam.
16. Wash the mould by water and obtain a mould for examination.

Precautions 1. Apply oil and spacer to the plunger

2. Maintain pressure and temperature up to required valve for required time.
3. Pressure must be released through pressure release value before opening the
cross-head beam.
4. The mould should be cooled by cooling system before dejecting.
