Let Us Study

Music of South Asia and Middle East

In ancient times, musical instruments have been part of the heritage of

the people of Israel. The Bible mentions dozens of musical instruments such
as trumpet-like, recorders, clay rattles, seashells, bells, cymbals, and
whistles were being listed and have been found in statuettes and clay
figurines of musicians, drummers and professional mourners. All of which
goes to prove that music and song occupied an important place in ancient
Israel.

Chordophones are some of the most popular instruments of Israel. It

has five basics types which are bows, harps, lutes, lyres, and zithers.
Aerophones, membraphones, and percussion instruments were also played
in their special ceremonies and events.

3
Among those instruments are the following:

AEROPHONE Shofar

A horn of a ram or other animal- made ritual

musical instrument which is used during an

important religious event. In biblical times, it

was sounded during the Sabbath, announcing of

the New Moon, and proclamation of the

anointing of a new king.

PERCUSSION Timbrel

It matched either in a frame of a drum or a

modern tambourine.

Known as the “tof” of the ancient Hebrews. The

principal percussion instrument of the

ancient Israelites.

4
MEMBRANOPHONE Darbuk

An hour-glass-shaped drum wherein the drum

head or skin is stretched tight with rope or

leather thongs or even nails. The body may be

made of copper, ceramic, pottery, or wood.

Sometimes called a doumbek, tablah, or goblet

drum

CHORDOPHONE
Kinnor

An ancient Israelite musical instrument in

the yoke lutes family which was the first to be

mentioned in the Old Testament. It

was described in the Bible made from a sheep's

small intestine as having 10 strings, and

played with a plectrum .

Let Us Reflect

South Asia and Middle East have unique perspective on its culture
and tradition which relates to the distinct characteristics of its music and
musical instruments. This expresses that using our creative minds, we can make
our own music as well as musical instruments. We can use our own resources to
show our skills and amazing talents.

Great job! It’s a nice work! You explored ways of producing sounds on
a variety of sources which imitates Israeli instruments. I hope you find more
instruments and know its distinct characteristics. It can also be
entertaining if we accompany it with a song.
