other a group of theme parks and resorts in the USA. Cancun has almost four million visitors a year, and
Disney World fifty-two million (of course many people visit Disney World just for one day, while almost
everybody stays in Cancun for several days, a week or more).

The planning of Cancun began in 1968, and development work in 1970. The Mexican government build roads,
an international airport and all the basic infrastructure, and financed the construction of nine hotels. In 1974,
the first hotel, the Playa Blanca Hotel (now Temptation Resort), opened. In 1967, almost nobody lived in
Cancun area, there was almost nothing but sand and coconut trees. Now, the permanent population is about
700, 000 and there are 30 000 hotel rooms.
