Design of invert siphon at Intersection of Sewer Line (cont.

14) & Umm

Alqura Project Box Culvert

Inverted siphon: when an obstacle such as railway or a river or box culvert

obstructs the sewer line the sewers can be lowered below these obstacles.

For inverted siphon: minimum velocity 0.9m/s

Pipe flow full (under pressure)

More than one pipe is used to overcome these variations. Usually three
pipes are used.

The first pipe is used to carry the minimum wastewater flow (Qmin)

The second carry the deference between the average flow and the
minimum flow (Qavg- Qmin)

The third carries the deference between the maximum flow and average
flow (Qmax- Qavg).

Assume the following:

Peak factor = 2.5

Minimum flow factor = 0.3

Minimum velocity when flowing full= 1 m/s

Solution :

Length inverted siphon = 25 m

Invert level upstream = 262.12 above the sea level

invert level downstream = 262.21 above the sea level

the maximum flow interring the upper manhole is

Qmax = 0.46m3/s

Q average = = 0.18 m3/s Q min = 0.18×0.3 = 0.05 m3/s

Flow in the first pipe = Qmin = .05 m3/s

Flow in the second pipe = Qavg – Qmin = 0.13 m3/s

Flow in the third pipe = Qmax- Q avg = 0.28 m3/s

Design of minimum flow pipe

Q= AV

0.03 = = 0.2 m or 200 mm

Headless in the first pipe

1= (1/0.013)×{0.2/4}2/3×S0.5

S = 9×10-3

H = S×L = 25×9×10-3 = 0.225 m
