Unit 9
beans the seeds of a climbing plant or the long thin cases which
contain those seeds
bread a very common food made from flour, water, and yeast
breakfast the first meal of the day. It is usually eaten in the early
part of the morning
butter a soft yellow substance made from cream. You spread it
on bread or use it in cooking
cake a sweet food made by baking a mixture of flour, eggs,
sugar, and fat in an oven
candy sweet foods such as toffees or chocolate
carrots long, thin, orange-colored vegetables. They grow under
the ground, and have green shoots above the ground
cereal a food made from grain
cheese a solid food made from milk
chicken birds that are kept on a farm for their eggs and for their
meat
chocolate a sweet hard food made from cocoa beans
coffee a hot drink made with water and ground or powdered
coffee beans
coin a small piece of metal which is used as money
cookies sweet food made from flour, butter, eggs and sugar
corn flakes small flat pieces of maize that are eaten with milk as a
breakfast cereal
customer someone who buys goods or services, especially from a
shop
dessert something sweet, such as fruit or a pudding, that you eat
at the end of a meal
diet the type and range of food that you regularly eat
doll a child's toy which looks like a small person or baby
drinks liquid that you drink
eat to put something into your mouth, chew it, and swallow it
eggs an oval object that is produced by a female bird eaten as
food
fish the flesh of a fish eaten as food
food what people and animals eat
hamburgers minced meat which has been shaped into a flat circle
hot dogs a long bread roll with a hot sausage inside it

ice cream a very cold sweet food which is made from frozen cream
or milk and sugar
juice the liquid that you get from a fruit

milk the white liquid produced by cows, goats, and some other
animals, which people drink and use to make butter,
cheese, and yoghurt
oranges a round juicy fruit with a thick, orange colored skin
party a social event, often in someone's home, at which people
enjoy themselves doing things such as eating, drinking,

pasta a type of food made from a mixture of flour, eggs, and
water that is formed into different shapes and then boiled
potato chips very thin slices of fried potato that are eaten cold as a
snack
potatoes quite round vegetables with brown or red skins and white
insides. They grow under the ground
rice white or brown grains taken from a cereal plant
salad a mixture of raw or cold foods such as lettuce, cucumber,
and tomatoes
sandwich two slices of bread with a layer of food such as cheese or
meat between them
shopping list a list of the things that you want to buy when you go
shopping
soda a sweet fizzy drink
steak a large flat piece of beef without much fat
tea a drink made by adding hot water to tea leaves or tea
bags
turkey a large bird that is kept on a farm for its meat
vegetables plants such as cabbages, potatoes, and onions which you
can cook and eat
waiter a man who works in a restaurant, serving people with
food and drink
wedding cake a large cake, usually decorated with icing, that is served
at a wedding reception

Unit 10
ache a steady, fairly strong pain in a part of your body
arm the two long parts of your body that are attached to your
shoulders and that have your hands at the end
aspirin a mild drug which reduces pain and fever
back the part of the body between the head and the legs that
is on the opposite side to the chest and stomach
body all your physical parts, including your head, arms, and
legs
chest the top part of the front of your body where your ribs,
lungs, and heart are
cold (noun) a mild, very common illness which makes you sneeze a
lot and gives you a sore throat or a cough
cough to force air out of your throat with a sudden, harsh noise
cough medicine liquid medicine that you take when you have a cough
disease an illness which affects people, animals, or plants, for
example one which is caused by bacteria or infection
ear the two parts of your body, one on each side of your
head, with which you hear sounds
face the front part of your head from your chin to the top of
your forehead, where your mouth, eyes, nose, and other
features are
feel to experience a particular emotion or physical sensation
fever body temperature that is higher than usual and makes
your heart beat faster

leg the long parts of their body that they use to stand on

malaria a serious disease carried by mosquitoes which causes
periods of fever
measles an infectious illness that gives you a high temperature

birthday the anniversary of the date on which you were born
Christmas a Christian festival when the birth of Jesus Christ is celebrated.
club an organization of people interested in a particular activity or
subject who usually meet on a regular basis
go to the movies when you are talking about seeing a movie in a movie theater
holiday a day when people do not go to work or school because of a
religious or national festival
Independence the day on which its people celebrate their independence from
