UMass Dartmouth Project Details:
Leduc Center of Civic Engagement “With the assistance of VISTA, the UMass Dartmouth Leduc
Center, Project Success, will assist low-income students in the
successful completion of their college degree through
incorporating meaningful service into their college career as a
strategy for retention.” - UMass Dartmouth VAD: 2020-2021

Our program focused on the Leduc Center’s mission to enrich


the lives of students, staff, faculty, and the community through
engaged learning and mutually beneficial partnerships. We were
able to overcome the challenges of the Pandemic by building
program capacity and establishing a variety of volunteer
programs, opportunities, and events, where all members of the
communities could engage, learn, and create positive impact!

The Carney Academy Murals:


Important Projects and Events Helped design, sketch, and paint two murals at Sgt.
William Carney Memorial Academy Elementary School
to help encourage global and regional studies.
Carney Coaching Virtual Tutoring:
• Organized Afternoon Painting Sessions
Designed and coordinated an online virtual tutoring program for Sgt.
• Recruited 5 Local Volunteers
William Carney Memorial Academy Elementary School in New Bedford,
• Total Hours: 16
Massachusetts supported and later run by UMass Dartmouth Students.
October 2020 to May 2021
• Trained 11 Tutors, 2 Monitors, and 1 Coordinator.
• Created 5 Training Modules.
• Tutor Sessions held every Monday to Thursday.
• Served 10 Elementary School Students.
• Total Training Hours Completed: 364 Hours
• Total Completed Sessions: 195
• Total Hours of Tutoring: 195 Hours
• Total hours of Lesson Planning: 195 Hours
• Total Hours Completed: 754 Hours

MLK Day Event:


To honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., UMass Dartmouth Leduc Center hosted
a four-day event from of Jan . 15th to Jan. 18th, celebrating the important
impact Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had on American society. This included a
series of guest speakers and presenters, who shared how Dr. King inspired
them to overcome challenges and societal barriers.
AmeriCorps’ Responsibilities:

• Q&A Organization and Typed Response
• Technical Support
• Total Attendance: 125 Participants

Earth Month Coalition:


SouthCoast Earth Month Coalition (EMC) is dedicated to protecting our
environment and expanding environmental education in SouthCoast
Massachusetts. EMC is comprised of 19 organizations and led by UMass
Dartmouth’s Leduc Center of Civic Engagement.

EMC’s Earth Month Summit: A virtual Earth Month Event with a live
discussion board, Q&A, and tour of the EMC’s Virtual Art Gallery.
Welcomed Senator Ed Markey and Varshini Prakash as this year’s
recipients of the Mother Earth and Father Ocean for their contributions to
the environment. With statements from both individuals.
AmeriCorps’ Responsibility:
• Organized, coordinated, and advertised event.
• Technical support.
• Helped Coordinate Shoreline and Park Cleanups.
• Attendance: 45 Participants
• Fully Self-Sustained Program with 19 organizations backing it.

EMC’s Virtual Art Gallery:


Designed, coordinated, and presented the first annual
SouthCoast Earth Month Virtual Art Gallery, celebrating
local art focused on Environmental Sustainability,
Education, and Awareness.
AmeriCorps’ Responsibilities:
• Created and distributed links to Sign Up.
• Collected and organized 36 art submissions.
• Learned how to use T4 Programing.
• Designed and implemented an official UMass
Dartmouth Webpage.

Wednesdays at the Farm


Led and supported a group of UMass Students at the
YMCA Farm in Dartmouth, Ma. Students learned
about the importance of farming, harvesting, and
food security. All food is donated to help support local
food pantries in Dartmouth and New Bedford
Massachusetts.

• 7 Wednesdays
• 2 hours each day
• Groups ranged from 2 to 10 volunteers.
UMass Student Volunteers: • Cleared fields of rocks, removed weeds, repaired
Narcisse Kunda & Liz Anusauskas garden beds, planted seeds, collected litter, and
removed plastic coverings.
