INTRODUCTION

The Civic Welfare Training Service 2 (CWTS 2) is a sequel to CWTS 1. It is designed to

immerse students in activities that will arm them the capability to contribute in the upliftment
of the general welfare and the quality of life of the community and the enhancement of its
facilities especially those that are devoted to improving the health, environment,
entrepreneurship, safety, recreation and morale of the citizen.

ESSENCE OF COMMUNITY IMMERSION

As part of the learning experiences of NSTP, community immersion is a requirement prescribe

to all student who are taking up the program. it is expected from the course to have extensive
projects and program for the brgy. since NSTP 2 serve now as their practicum, while NSTP 1 is
more of discovering oneself and enhancing values and civic responsibility among the students,
NSTP 2 is the application of all the skills, knowledge, and values that they have acquired
through community immersion as presented in NSTP 1

In community immersion, each student is given the chance to understand and realize the
various concerns that the underprivileged and poor communities are experiencing it widens
and enriches their experience as they grow to become more responsive to the need to other
people and more civic conscious whose ideals and goals are geared towards the betterment of
society where they belong.

Furthermore, it will give them the chance to appreciate and be satisfied with what they have
and at the same time share their blessing and knowledge through their interaction with this less
privileged people.
Imbedded with this ideas and goals, the NSTP students are now ready to initiate community-
based project and activities which aims to address the various concern and problems besetting
the community people

COMMUNITY IMMERSION

What is the importance of community immersion in NSTP?

Community immersion is a strategy in community organizing that is sought to imbibe among
the NSTP trainees a better understanding and realization of the different community concerns
through the exposure on actual life situations specifically in the deprived, depressed and the
underprivileged (DDU) communities.

Community immersion allows individuals who are not familiar with the people and
communities where they will work immerse themselves in these settings. This gives them the
opportunity to reflect on their assumptions, attitudes, and the knowledge base of their
profession and to gain cultural competence

How does community immersion help students?

Provides an opportunity to apply academic learning to real life events. Builds relationships and
'social connectedness' with peers and adults, and exposes students to diversity and
multiculturalism. Improves lifelong communication, interpersonal and critical thinking skills.
Here's Why Community Service Is Important – Top 5 Benefits
1. Community Service Helps Connect to the Community. ...
2. It Benefits Your Career Prospects. ...
3. Community Service Raises Social Awareness. ...
4. Community Service Establishes Contacts and Friendships. ...
5. Community Service Helps Improve Your Skills.

How does immersion help in the future?

It improves and builds new skills. Immersions will have students gain new skill sets and
improve their existing capabilities. It is also through immersion that students get to discover
themselves and jumpstart their professional growth.

What are the benefits of immersion in preparing the students for their future employment?
One of its components, the work immersion program, provides students “real workplace”
experience, giving students a set of technical-vocational and livelihood skills that can help
them make more informed career choices and improve their employment prospects.

What are the 2 phases of community immersion?

Most immersion programs offer an Orientation & Education phase as well as a Service phase to
the experience. The Orientation & Education phase provides students insight about their new
cultural environment, while the Service phase encourages them to interact with the culture.

What is purpose of immersion?

The main purpose of immersion learning is to develop students' second language acquisition
and the learning of academic content and cultural situations. Hence, students should be able to
communicate and interact competently with more people in more places in an increasingly
independent world community.

G. IMPLEMENTING UNIT/GROUP:
Every member in the group will be divided and be given tasks that all must take
responsibility, while taking in mind that it is needed to document the progression of
every group works in order to provide a journal, which held a role of reference in order
to measure the work that has been executed.
H. OBJECTIVES:
This proposal aims to help the community by dedicating efforts to prevent losses, to
protect our environment, and eventually, to save lives, while instilling environment
awareness among community members. At the end of the project, the members should
able to:
• To have an awareness about natural hazards and disasters, and its kinds and
causes.
• To have knowledge about the possible impacts of natural hazards and disasters
to people.
• To have knowledge about proper management to prevent and mitigate more
dangerous effects of these events.
• To instill in the minds of the community members the importance of being
aware of the different hazards and disasters we may encounter.

I. RATIONALE:

It is undeniable that our existence depends primarily on our environment. Different

environmental events when they become threatening and vicious may alter lives or even
make lives perish. They may threaten to affect society adversely. This is because when
calamities strike, we are often not prepared for their occurrences. Some calamities may
be avoided or may even have less impact to one's life only if we were cautious about the
hazards that bring forth those damages. That is why it is very important for any
community to have an awareness about natural hazards and disasters to mitigate the
possible effects of any hazards and disasters that we may encounter.

J. BACKGROUND:
According to Emergency Events Database (EMDAT), an International Disaster
Database launched by the Center for Research on the Epidemiology Disasters, over 95.6
million people were affected by 335 natural disasters that occurred in 2017. Total cost
of losses amounted to $335 billion. The most vulnerable continent in the world is Asia
which is perennially affected by floods and storms, with 58% of the total deaths, 44% of
world's disaster events, and 70% of the total people are affected. US is said to have the
highest economic losses representing 88% of the total cost from 93 disasters. From the
United Nations Report in 2014, the Philippines has eight out of 10 cities in the world
that are considered at risk to natural disasters.

People living below the poverty line are often the most affected sector in a poor
country. By 2030, as the problem on disasters' vulnerability increases, it is expected that
325 extremely poor people are to be affected because they have to live in 49 most
disaster prone countries. Thus, increasing the figures on deaths and losses is to be
expected.
To understand natural hazard, we have to delve on its nature. There is risk when one is
exposed to the chance of injury. A hazard poses risk because the former presupposes
dangerous chances where a chance of loss is potential. Given an environment setting,
hazard is a situation where threat or a future source of danger is likely to cause harm to
people in the form of death, injury, diseases, and stress. Human activities such as
economic (potential loss of income due to destruction of economic goods), educational
(perennial suspension of classes leading to loss contact hours), property such as
damages or loss of properties, and environment such as pollution, loss of amenities, and
destruction of fauna and flora are also consequences affected by hazards. Despite the
advances in science and technology, we are still helpless in the face of natural
calamities which are known to us as disasters. When hazards are natural phenomena,
they are obviously cannot be prevented. They do not regard humans and the
environment or the population where they strike. When these hazards occur in a
desolate area and cause no harm to people and their properties, these are not known as
disasters technically. We have to be aware on the types of hazard to prevent losses, to
protect our environment, and eventually, to save lives.

Based on Rappler's report on Worst Natural Disasters in the Philippines (Dela Cruz,
2014), the two super-typhoons that hit the Philippines are Typhoon Yolanda (with an
international name, Haiyan) occurring in November 2013 and Typhoon Pablo
(internally known as Typhoon Bopha) occurring in December 2012. They are
considered super typhoons because both appear in all three categories, namely: (1)
worst in terms of number of casualties; (2) worst in terms of amount of damages; and
(3) worst in terms of number of people affected.

Another powerful typhoon that battered Cagayan and other provinces in Luzon with
strong winds and heavy rains in September 2018. Typhoon Ompong (with international
name, Mangkhut) is said to have an estimated damage to agriculture amounting to
P26.7 billion, the second highest damage to agriculture since super-typhoon
Yolanda(Haiyan), which has a record of P35 billion damages in agriculture.

That is why we, the first year students from the department of Business Administration
Major in Financial Management of OSIAS Colleges, wants to propose this community
immersion and symposium that aims to help the community by dedicating efforts to
prevent losses, to protect our environment, and eventually, to save lives, while instilling
environment awareness among community members
II. DOCUMENTARY REPORT

JANUARY 24, 2023 is our first meeting in National Service Training Program (NSTP) Civil
Welfare Training Service II (CWTS II), our instructor Mr. Neptali Bermudez conducted an
orientation wherein he says the house rules during our class and the do's and don't. Furthermore,
he also informed us with the activities that we will be doing for this course. After that, he let us
form groups for the community immersion that we would be conducting.

FEBRUARY 14, 2023 our instructor, Mr. Neptali Bermudez, gave us time to plan and discuss
what topic or program we will be conducting for the community immersion. For us to organize
our thoughts and everything that is needed throughout the course of the project. Also, Mr.
Neptali gave more detailed instructions about the community immersion.

FEBRUARY 28, 2023 we submitted our project plan as a finalized plan of our community
immersion. Days prior, we already decided what topic we want to focus on. A topic that we are
confident to discuss to everyone. We also delegated the tasks so that our work will be easier and
smoother, and for everyone to have a input to the project.

MARCH 28, 2023, start of our preparations for community immersion. We are divided into two
groups, first group will be the Documentation Committee, responsible for documenting of the
activity and the other one, is the Operation Committee, responsible to share there knowledge
about the topic . We did a dry run of our seminar, so that on the actual seminar, we will be able
to do it without any problems or issues.

APRIL 18, 2023, this day was supposedly the day of our community immersion. However, we
didn’t got the chance to do a onsite seminar, we were instructed by Mr. Neptali Bermudez, to
make a video presentation instead, aside from that as the final project for this course, we also
need to provide a Narrative Report of our project. As being practiced, the Documentation
Committee did their job, as well as the Operation Committee.

APRIL 25, 2023, Mr. Neptali Bermudez instructed us to finish the video presentation and also
the narrative report.

B. PROJECT ASSESSMENT
a. Findings

We believe that through the seminar that we did everyone have an awareness about
natural hazards and disasters, and its kinds and causes. They are now fully aware the
difference of the two terms. Another is that, they have knowledge about the possible
impacts of natural hazards and disasters to the people. Aside from that, they have
knowledge about proper management to prevent and mitigate more dangerous effects
of these events. Furthermore, they now know the importance of being aware of the
different hazards and disasters we every individual might encounter. Lastly, every
information in our seminar are already instilled in the minds of the community
members.
b. Conclusion
After taking up NSTP, our has been aware of the different crises hitting different
parts of the world, particular our country. With that, environmental concerns is very
significant to every nation, particularly in our country Even some educated citizens
blame the local government for not making solutions for the current problems. And as
the saying goes, "If we want change, change must start from us."

From the personal experiences of the group, every member would definitely testify
that the community service is a great help to become a better person. It was a great
experience that would totally last a lifetime. Lessons as an individual were
discovered, thus achieving the goals that the group really wanted to bring into reality.
Most importantly, our ultimate aim was achieved- helping the people in that chosen
community. The project we implemented enabled the everyone to be more aware,
knowledgeable, and ready for environmental events. We were so certain that we left
something memorable in minds of everyone through the video that we made.

Our project imposed mainly concerned environmental programs that started a big
change in the perception of everyone. A informed, prepared and better people has
become after the implementation of the scheme. With that being said, we think that
our goal in this project is being achieved, that is why, each member of the group are
proud to ourselves.
V. REFLECTIONS, JOURNALS AND REACTION PAPERS

Natural hazard is a natural phenomenon that might have negative effect on humans and other
animals, or the environment. While a natural disaster is the negative impact following an
actual occurrence of natural hazard on the event that is significantly harms a community.
Natural hazards are severe and extreme weather and climate events. Human and material
losses caused by such disasters are a major obstacle to sustainable development. For me early
warning is a major element of disaster risk reduction. It can prevent loss of life and reduce the
economic and material impacts of hazardous events including disasters. To be effective, early
warning systems need to actively involve the people and communities at risk from range of
hazards, facilitate public education and awareness of risks, disseminate messages and
warnings efficiently and ensure that there is a constant state of preparedness and that early
action is enabled. Overall, the NSTP is essentially important because the teaching of
citizenship education and youth resilience also plays a role in creating citizens who have a
spirit of self-sacrifice and are loyal to the ideology of the country.

Through this project I realized that the environment is the natural place for the survival of
living organisms and their interaction with other biotic and abiotic factors. Nowadays, there
are several severe environmental issues that will make the survival of future generations more
difficult. Humans utilize the environment and its resources for a better life. It is up to humans
to utilize it wisely and sustainably but they are the most responsible factor for the poor state of
the environment. Some most common environmental issues are, deforestation, pollution, and
loss of diversity, and all of these three, have a direct effect on us people, that is why, we chose
to spread the awareness about environment issues, and let everyone realize that the
environmental events that we are experiencing are the effects of the irresponsibility of
humanity.

An Environment is everything that is around us, which includes both living and nonliving
things such as soil, water, animals and plants, which adapt themselves to their surroundings. It
is nature’s gift that helps in nourishing life on Earth. The apparent health of the environment
provides those that live in it a healthy existence. However, if the environment is unhealthy, we
face a dire consequence. Our forests, rivers, oceans and soils provide us with the food we eat,
the air we breathe, the water we irrigate our crops with. We also rely on them for numerous
other goods and services we depend on for our health, happiness and prosperity. These natural
assets are often called the world’s ‘natural capital’.

To conclude, we can say that humans are a major source of environmental issues. Likewise,
our activities are the major reason that the level of harmful gases and pollutants have
increased in the environment. But now the humans have taken this problem seriously and now
working to eradicate it.

NSTP 2 is all about community engagement with the help of partner communities and
organizations. It also promote civic consciousness among the youth, develop their physical,
moral, spiritual, intellectual and social well-being, and instill patriotism and nationalism. As a
student and taking NSTP 2 we learn how to become a responsible citizen and to be an
equipped person who can be able to help others in times of needs and such circumstances.

Environment event council supports and promotes a number of events such us schools
environment day, world Environment day, national tree day and more. The events help educate
and inform the community about environmental issues of significance.

Julia Duay, BSBA FM

With our topic in NSTP2 which is environmental events, I realized that we must handle
disaster issues in our country in order to be adequately prepared for any hazards that may
arise in the future. We can reduce the damages or even loss of life if we have enough capacity
to adjust to any type of calamity or disaster. We must take action and advocate for people’s
preparedness in order to avoid large-scale destruction and the loss of many lives.

NSTP or the National service training Program is one of the subjects in College here in the
Philippines. Which all 1st year students needs to take this subject. It was also mandated by the
law. At first I thought the class was boring and not interesting. But as the class started my first
impression was so wrong. Because the class was not boring and it was so interesting. It
teaches us to be a better person. It helps us to be aware. Like for example the problems that
encountered by our country nowadays. It makes us aware about our environment. This subject
makes us realize about everything. Like the current issues that is tackled every time in the
news. For me my NSTP experience was such an incredible experience. Because it helps me to
build friendships and helps me also to be a better student.

Regarding the topic that we want to convey through our project, forces of nature, such as
earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, and volcanoes, cause natural disasters. They occur with little
or no warning and can have devastating effects on people, property, and the entire
environment. Natural disasters can have long-term impacts on an area and its inhabitants,
such as economic and social disruption, displacement, and health problems.

The NSTP program aims to strengthen the youth’s defense readiness and service ethics while
also fostering their physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual, and social well-being. This subject
taught me how to be a good citizen and how to be prepared to assist people in need and under
similar conditions. I’ve learned the value of volunteering and how it enhances our lives in
general during the NSTP. Through exercising our leadership and waste management skills, we
discovered how to reach out to others. We benefited not just our fellowmen but also ourselves
because we were able to strengthen our moral principles and develop our personalities. The
National Service Training Program improved us as people

Ma. Francine Mikee Hillary Valdez, BSBA-FM

The National Service Training Program or NSTP is a subject mainly concerned with
community engagement with the help of partner communities and organizations. The NSTP 2
taught me how to become a responsible citizen and to be an equipped person who can be able
to help others in times of needs and circumstances. During the discussion of NSTP 2 I have
learned the importance of being a volunteer and how it positively affect our lives in general.

In the course, National Service Training Program or NSTP2, we, the students, are asked to do
such presentation concerning to one particular social problem. And environmental awareness
was the main focus of our group. Environmental awareness is like having an understanding of
the environment, the impacts of human behaviors on it, and the importance of its protection.
And to give awareness to the people, we have discussed to our audience and listeners the
different kinds of disasters that can affect the normal function of life. We gave them awareness
by simply discussing the effects of climate change. Environmental awareness is critical because
it can help to minimize pollution and global warming. If all the people is environmentally
aware, I think we will have a better world where negativity could not grow and foster. There
would be clean air to absorb, a sparkling ocean to swim on, and an amazing world to live in.

Throughout our time in this project, I realized so many things. Our planet earth is continuously
changing. Today, human and animal species are experiencing numerous environmental events,
that we cannot control. However one thing is for sure, we humans, contribute why these
environmental events are becoming more disastrous and we people and other species are
vulnerable. These environmental concerns range from harsh climate changes, global warming,
air, land and water pollution, acid rain, ozone layer depletion, depletion of natural resources
and deforestation to endangered plant and animal species.

A healthy environment is imperative for the continued existence of humans, animals and plants
alike. There is an urgent need to preserve Nature’s wealth and handle the indispensable
resources which Mother Earth generously provided us with. There are several pressing efforts
that can be undertaken in order to safeguard our environment and save the planet before we
are completely wiped out.

We need to know that everyone has a vital role to play in creating awareness in order to
awaken the masses to the gravity of environmental problems and working on their solutions.
People should be encouraged to save the environment. This could be done by putting up
posters and banners in the neighbourhood, school, college or workplace; organizing
environmental awareness campaigns, getting t-shirts or caps made with environmental
awareness slogans written and spreading the word. Persuade people to participate in attempts
to reduce global warming.

I do believe that, through our project, we impose awareness on people about environmental
events and we ignite their minds thinking the current environmental events which year by year
becoming disastrous. Through our seminar, it is a starting point for everyone to give
importance to our environment. In this way, also, we can save our planet from extinction.
Every small act can make a huge difference. Immediate precautionary measures have to be put
into effect before Mother Earth starts cleansing herself of anything that is creating an
imbalance.
Jacklyn Gabrielle Morales, BSBA FM

Nowadays environmental problems are the most burning for the society, air, water, land and
nuclear pollution badly damage the nature. People cut down trees and destroy the habitat of
thousands of animals. As a result, many species are in danger of extinction.

Factories pollute our rivers and lakes with dangerous chemicals. The increasing number of
cars in towns and cities has led to the growth of harmful gases in the atmosphere. There is
much litter everywhere, our parks and forests are full of rubbish. Scientists believe that the
problem of global warming in becoming more and more serious. The result of human activity
such as acid rains, greenhouse effect and ozone layer destruction cause the changes of the
climate on our planet and destroy it.

All these facts have a bad influence on our health. More and more people suffer from allergies
and breathing problems. It’s almost impossible to find a healthy person nowadays. People are
becoming more and more aware that our planet is under threat and it’s all our fault.
Fortunately, it’s not too late to solve these problems. We have the time, the money and the
technologies to take care of our planet. There are a number of simple things we can do if we
want to help our planet.

For example, if we stop wasting paper and start recycling it. We’ll have some of the millions of
trees which are cut down every year. We should also stop making unnecessary car journeys to
cut down air pollution. We can create parks for endangered species of animals. But the most
important thing we must do is to open our eyes and act immediately. The earth is our home and
we should protect and save it for ourselves and for the future generations.

Junnelyn Mae Mula, BSBA FM

Confucius once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

We’ve all wondered how to improve the world at some point in our lives. It’s amusing and
humiliating at the same time that everyone wants to change the world, but no one has ever
sought or planned to alter himself first. Every mission requires one foot in front of the other. At
the very least, we must try to go forward by taking one step forward. Being involved in a
community effort like ours (Environment effort) made me a better person than I was before.
Yes, I am proud to be an active member of our group’s leadership. Why, even the smallest acts
of service to the community are a big honor. I’m delighted that teamwork is evident throughout
our project. We banded together to make things work out for the best.

We may not got the chance to have an on-site seminar to our selected participants, however, I
think through our video, we have a bigger chance to reach not just Tarlac but probably the
whole country. It makes me feel so noble, for doing this project, as we will be able to give
awareness to people about a very important topic. Several various activities were planned, and
not everyone was pleased or delighted. Failures and quandaries, on the other hand, are
unavoidable. When crises occur, there may be corrective actions, but they will not make a
group ideal. Keep in mind that we completed the job for two reasons: to gain and to lose. It
was similar to killing two birds with one stone. We didn’t make things for our own convenience
or selfish reasons. In fact, we even gave up our conveniences for the sake of the poor
community, which is referred to as selflessness.

What matters in the end is the people. We may not be able to alter everything, but we have
made a difference – a difference that will pave the path for other advocacies to come and be
heard in the future. Our voices have been heard, our activities have had an impact, and
patience has become a virtue. We merely strive to set a good example for others in order for
this completed effort to fulfill a simple purpose. Lastly, as our project is all about the
environment, I hope that this project of ours will ignite everyone’s passion to help our
environment to be a great place to live . For it is our responsibility to come together with our
micro efforts and will have macro effects because everything is possible and feasible, if we just
have the willingness, then we can make a significant difference in our lives.

The table above shows the summarized record of attendance throughout the course of this
project. Majority of the members were active during group meetings. We are diligent in
attending every group meetings. We had active engagement in all activities, we had physical
presence in all activities, we practiced punctuality and respect for diligence. It is because,
whether in class or group meetings, each student is expected to actively participate and show
respect to other people. Students are expected to be punctual at all times. Aside from that,
everyone were cooperative and vocal with their opinions and suggestions every meeting.

We believe, by simply being diligently attending group meetings, it help us to stay on track,
understand expectations, foster important peer social interactions and generally promote a sense
of connectedness within the group. Increasingly, attendance is being understood as a precursor
and leading indicator for project success. Thus, this project of ours became successful because
we have the right mindset and the right behavior in conducting this project for the subject
NSTP2.
