PROBLEM 1

Situation – A tied column has a dimension of 500 mm by 350 mm. It is reinforced with 6 – 28 mm ϕ bars
arranged as shown below. The concrete cover measured from the centroid of the reinforcement is 75
mm. f’c = 27.6 MPa, fy = 415 MPa. Consider the area of displaced concrete by compression bars. Assume
bending is about the y-axis and the column is considered to be short column.

• Compute the design axial load strength ϕPn for a small eccentricity.
• Compute the design moment strength if the column is subjected in a pure moment.
• Compute the design axial load strength ϕPn if the eccentricity e = 125 mm.

PROBLEM 2

Situation - The column shown in figure below is reinforced with eight 28-mm diameter steel with fy =
414 MPa. Concrete strength f’c = 27.6 MPa. Use column interaction diagram provided below.

• Determine the nominal load Pn when e = 180 mm.

• Determine the nominal load Pn when e = 550 mm.
PROBLEM 3

Situation - The spiral column shown in figure is reinforced with eight 25 mm diameter bars. Concrete
cover measured from bar centroid is 60 mm. f’c = 27.6 MPa. fy = 414 MPa. Using the interaction
diagram, determine the following:

• The nominal load Pn when e = 100 mm

• The nominal load Pn when e = 200 mm
• The required number of 25 mm bars if Pn = 2800 kN and Mn = 250 kN-m.
