Quarter 1 DEFINTION, PROCESS, AND PURPOSE:

THE NATURE OF RESEARCH

LESSONS 1

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS: Read the specific directions carefully before answering the exercises and
activities. Accomplish this module on or before JANUARY 8, 2021. For online consultations, please refer
to the given schedule. BEFORE SUBMITTING THE ACCOMPLISHED MODULE, MAKE SURE THAT
THE TEXTS, PICTURES, AND SHAPES ARE PROPERLY ARRANGED.

ESSENTIAL LEARNING PURPOSES: At the end of these lessons, I am expected to:

1. Define correctly a good research;
What do I 2. Enumerate the research step-by-step process; and
need to 3. Practice one’s acquired knowledge about research by processing how certain by-

products of research affect human activities.

Before going further, let us see if you can answer this exercise. I know you can do it! This
will help you to determine and activate your prior knowledge about this topic!
What I Directions: Study closely the figure below. Draw out words that you can associate with
know? the term “Research” by writing it around the main shape. Do not limit your knowledge to
REVIEW the shapes provided. You are encouraged to add further figures that you think may serve
your best. Then, create a synthesis out of the contributing words to form a
comprehensible definition of research.

Consider research your personal journey. It will be challenging but

also exciting. Pack along for your journey a toolkit. Realize that on
this journey you need to respect people and the places you visit.
Enjoy the process using your natural skills such as the ability to

Research is usually a systematic and objective search for reliable

information. It is a systematic investigation, including research
developments, testing and evaluation, designed to develop or
contribute to generalizable knowledge. It also aims to establish
facts and reach new conclusions.

At a general level, research consists of three

steps:

This should be a familiar process. You engage

in solving problems every day and you start with
a question, collect some information, and then

form an answer. Although there are a few more steps in research than these three, this is the overall
framework for research. When you examine a published study, or conduct your own study, you will find
these three parts as the core elements.

Characteristics of Research
There are a couple of famous definitions of research and most of these definitions agree with the common five
characteristics of research. They are the following:
1. Being systematic – Research should follow ordered steps
2. Being objective – Research should have a specific goal
3. Feasibility – Research should be achievable through the given limitations
4. Being Empirical – Research should be based from facts and evidences
5. Clarity – The research should have clear content and intent.
Importance of Research (Reddy, 2019)
 Enhances Knowledge – You get to know detailed information about that topic.
The more the knowledge of the topic, the more successful is the research.
 Clarifies Confusion – The research helps in clarifying the complicated facts and
figures.
 Helps in Understanding Society – In order to know society’s norms, policies,
code of conduct, one needs to do proper research or it may become difficult to
survive in society.
 Improving Practices – The educational research is important for the students to
improve practices and at the same time, it helps in improving those individuals who
really wish to bring improvement in those practices.
 Helps in decision making – It prepares the person for taking essential decisions which further
necessitates the same from all the participants involved in the process.
The Research Process
We can divide the steps into 6 parts (Creswell, 2014).
1) Identify a problem and ask a question
Researchers begin a study by identifying a research problem that they need to address. They write about
this “problem” in the opening passages of their study and, in effect, give you as a reader the rationale for
why the study is important and why you need to read their study.
2) Reviewing the Literature
It accomplishes several purposes: shares results of other studies that are closely related to the one being
undertaken; relates a study to the ongoing dialogue in the literature, filling in gaps and extending prior
studies; and, provides a framework for establishing the importance of the study as well as the benchmark
for comparing the results with other findings. Essential Literature could be found in Encyclopedias,
Journals, Indexed Publications, and Electronic Sources, Books, etc.

Review of Related Literature and related studies are often used interchangeably but they are totally
different from each other. Here is the quick detail about the distinction of the two concepts!

4. Specifying a Purpose for Research
A focused restatement of the problem is the purpose statement. This statement conveys the overall
objective or intent of your research. As such, it is the most important statement in your research study.

5. Collecting Data
Collecting data means identifying and selecting individuals for a study, obtaining their permission to study
them, and gathering information by asking people questions or observing their
behaviors. Evidence helps provide answers to your research questions and
hypotheses.
6. Analyzing and Interpreting the Data
Analyzing and interpreting the data involves drawing conclusions about it;
representing it in tables, figures, and pictures to summarize it; and explaining the
conclusions in words to provide answers to your research questions.
7. Reporting and Evaluating Research
Reporting research involves deciding on audiences, structuring the report in a
format acceptable to these audiences, and then writing the report in a manner
that is sensitive to all readers.
