INTRODUCTION
1.1. General
Water is one of most important factors of productivity in irrigated agriculture. Suitable and
reliable irrigation water supply result in vast improvements in production and assure the
economic vitality of any country. Many civilizations have been dependent on irrigated
agriculture to provide the basic need of their society and enhance security of their people. One of
the major concerns in irrigation water is the general poor efficiency of water resource utilization.
A relatively safe estimate is that 40 percent or more of the water diverted for irrigation is wasted
at the farm level through either the deep percolation or surface run-off (FAO1989). However,
these losses often represent foregone opportunities for water that is high they delay the arrival of
water at adown stream diversions and because they almost universally produce poorer water
quality. Therefore, effective irrigation management require reliable performances.

1.2. Objectives

GENERAL OBJECTIVE
The overall objective of this project is to design irrigation headwork and main canal for dombei
salie small scale irrigation.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE

 To conduct frequency analysis to determine design of peak discharges for the project
 To determine crop and irrigation water demands
 To conduct overall design of the headwork and other hydraulic structures based on
standard procedures guarantee food security.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

 There are different challenges in irrigation structure. One of the most challenges is
misunderstanding and lack of good ethics. This will result in production of prejudice and
arrogates as well as result on misunderstanding. There will be losing quality of work,
lower motivation, and cost overrun and also there will be feud among stakeholders and
other personnel’s. As a result, the researcher intended to write this research proposal in
order to arrive at reasonable solution and to solve the problem. Due to the absence of
enough research on this idea, there is a problem of lack of good professional ethics.
Based on this reason we will gather information and arrive at reasonable solution and
finally give some recommendation for the concerned body to adopt or implement good
professional ethics in Dombie salie small scale irrigation project .

2. LITRATURE REVIEW

The following flood methods are commonly use for the estimation of the design rainfall.

I. Rational Method

II. Empirical Method

III. SCS Unit hydrograph method

3. METHODOLOGY
The following steps have been followed to execute the project work in general.
 Review of different relevant document
 Hydrological analysis to get maximum design flood discharge
 Assessment of water demand of the crop, The ET O , ET C and GIR values for each month
and each crop are calculated by using CROPWAT 8.0 computer package and the system
design is done manually.
 Design of headwork (weir)
 Design of irrigation system (main canal)
4.Project description

Salie-Korja small-scale irrigation project has been planned to benefit 44 families of Dombie-Salie
Kebele. This community had initiated this irrigation scheme through traditional diversion mechanism
many years ago and has been using till now. The whole communities in the Dombie-Salie have
expressed their interest for the construction of the scheme which was become very tedious to operate
due to lack of support and frequent maintenance requirement of the system. It is located in the Gamo
Goffa zone of the southern nations and nationalities region in Kemba woreda. The project intended to
make use of Korja River through construction of weir intake structure and associated structures for
gravity irrigation system. The irrigation system is located at 06 0 04'33.2''N latitude and 37008'40.5''E
longitudes within the Omo river basin. The name of the project has been derived from the name of the
river 'Korja' and the specific location where the irrigation farm located is 'Salie'.
6

Korja is a perennial stream collected springs originated from the mountains in the water shade and in
turn it also feeds Bara River which joins the Omo River. Omo river basin is one of the most important
river basin in the country especially with respect to the development of hydropower in the upper
portion of the basin where its topography rugged and feasible for the construction of storage dam.

Korja Stream has 124 liters per sec base flow during the driest month March 12 of the year 2010 G.C.
out of which the system diverts a maximum of 120 liters per sec to irrigate 68ha of land to irrigate a
farmland of crops of duty 2.8/sec/ha. Similar to the nationwide hydrology, temporal and spatial
variation of discharge is considerable. The maximum goes up to 140 m3/sec during the rainy season.

The irrigation scheme is located at 15 km from Kemba town which is 105 km south-west of Arbaminch.
The 87k.m dry weather road connects Kemba to the main highway that runs from Addis Abeba to
Jinka. The project is connected to Kamba town by poorly constructed village dirt road which requires
minor renovation for the construction and supervision of the project.

Korja-Salie small-scale irrigation project has been designed and planned for implementation based on
the request of the community of Dombie-Salie Kebele. PASIDP is responsible for the planning and
implementation of the project. The government through its concerned authorities in the regional level,
the zone's irrigation department and the local office has been part of project planning and will be part
of implementation and future management while the community will be supported and empowered
to take the overall responsibility of the project during the project lifespan.
