Switches
SMCS - 1408; 3121

Switches provide an open signal, a grounded signal, or a + battery signal to the switch inputs of the
Automatic Retarder Control (ARC).

The on/off switch informs the ARC whether the system should be functioning. The switch is located on
the dashboard. The ON position enables the ARC. The OFF position disables the ARC.

The on/off switch is a two-position rocker switch. The switch has three terminals. When the switch is in
the OFF position, terminal 1 is open and terminal 3 is closed to ground through terminal 2. When the
switch is in the ON position, terminal 3 is open and terminal 1 is closed to ground through terminal 2.
Terminal 1 connects to the ARC at contact 11 of connector "A". Terminal 2 connects to the frame
ground. Terminal 3 connects to the ARC at contact 26 of connector "A".

Note: This switch uses three terminals for diagnostics. If both terminal 1 and terminal 3 are open or
grounded, the ARC will identify a failure in the circuit. This fault is then shown on the display. See
Systems Operation, "Diagnostic Operation" for more information.

The retarder pressure switch informs the ARC whether retarder air pressure is present. The pressure
switch is in the front cab compartment. The pressure switch is connected to the lines for the brake air
that go to the relay for the brake air. During normal machine operation, the pressure switch is open. The
pressure switch closes to ground when retarding is activated by the ARC or by the retarder lever.

The pressure switch has a connector with two contacts. One contact connects to the ARC at contact 21
of connector "A". The other contact connects to the frame ground. When the pressure switch is off the
machine and on the test bench, the switch is normally open.

The auto retarder pressure switch informs the ARC whether the automatic retarder valve is functioning.
This verifies the passing of air pressure through the automatic retarder valve. The pressure switch is
attached to the output port of the automatic retarder valve in the front cab compartment. During normal
machine operation, the pressure switch is closed to ground. The pressure switch opens when the
automatic retarder valve is providing air pressure.

The pressure switch has one terminal that connects to the ARC at contact 16 of connector "A". The other
terminal connects to the frame ground. When the pressure switch is off the machine and on the test
bench, the switch is normally closed.

Engine Oil Pressure Switch

Typical example

Note: The engine oil pressure switch is only on MUI engines. On EUI engines, the ARC receives
information about the engine oil pressure via the CAT data link.

The engine oil pressure switch informs the ARC whether the engine is running. The pressure switch is
located on the left side of the engine. During normal machine operation, the pressure switch is closed to
ground. The pressure switch opens when the engine oil pressure decreases to the deactuation pressure.

The pressure switch has one terminal that connects to the ARC at contact 12 of connector "A". The other
terminal connects to the frame ground. When the pressure switch is off the machine and on the test
bench, the switch is normally open.

Accelerator Pressure Switch

Illustration 6 g00920345
Typical example

Note: The accelerator pressure switch is only on MUI engines. On EUI engines, the ARC receives
information about the accelerator pedal via the CAT data link.

The accelerator pressure switch informs the ARC whether the accelerator pedal is depressed. The
pressure switch is located on the right side of the rear cab compartment. The pressure switch is
connected to the governor air hose. The accelerator pedal controls the air pressure to the engine
governor. During normal machine operation, the pressure switch opens when the accelerator pedal is
depressed. Then, the pressure switch closes when the accelerator pedal is fully released.

The pressure switch has one terminal that connects to the ARC at contact 13 of connector "A". The other
terminal connects to the frame ground. When the pressure switch is off the machine and on the test
bench, the switch is normally closed.

(1) Clear switch

(2) Set switch

Clear switch (1) and set switch (2) control the information that is shown on the digital display on the
ARC. The switches are located near the ARC in the rear cab compartment. The switches are momentary
switches that are used by service personnel. During normal machine operation, the switches are open.
When the switches are activated, the switches are closed to ground.

Each switch has two screw terminals. One terminal of clear switch (1) connects to the ARC at contact 7
of connector "B". The other terminal connects to the frame ground. One terminal of set switch (2)
connects to the ARC at contact 6 of connector "B". The other terminal connects to the frame ground.
When the pressure switches are off the machine and on the test bench, the switches are normally open.
