You must read and understand the warnings and instructions contained in the Safety section of this
manual before performing any operation or maintenance procedures.

Transmission System Oil

Change the Oil

Operate the engine long enough to warm the oil. The machine must be level. Lower the bowl with
slight down pressure.

Engage the parking brake. Stop the engine.

1. Remove the transmission drain plug and drain the oil.

2. Remove the oil sump drain plug and allow the oil to drain.

3. Change the filter element. See the topic Transmission Oil Filter under Every 500 Service Hours or
3 Months.

4. Remove the magnetic strainer cover.

5. Remove the magnets from the housing.

6. Remove the screen from the housing.

7. Wash the tube and the screen in a clean, nonflammable solvent.

8. Clean the magnets with a cloth, a stiff bristle brush or pressure air.

NOTICE

Do not drop or rap the magnets against any hard objects. Replace any
damaged magnets.

9. Clean the cover and inspect the seal. Replace the seal, if it is damaged.

10. Insert the magnets in the screen.

11. Insert the screen, tube and magnets in the housing.

12. Install the cover. Tighten the cover bolts.

13. Clean and install the transmission drain plug.

14. Fill the transmission with oil through the fill tube. See the Lubricant Viscosities and Refill
Capacities chart.

15. Remove the transmission breather. Wash the breather in clean, nonflammable solvent. Install the
transmission breather.

16. Remove the transfer gear housing breather. Wash the breather in clean, nonflammable solvent.
Install the transfer gear housing breather.

17. Close the access cover.

18. Start and run the engine at low idle. Inspect for leaks.

19. Slowly operate the transmission controls to circulate the oil.

20. Maintain the oil level between the marks in the sight gauge (1). Add the oil through fill tube (2) if
necessary.

21. Stop the engine.

1. Remove the differential breather.

2. Wash the breather in clean, nonflammable solvent.

3. Allow the breather to dry.

4. Install the differential breather.

Air Dryer

Change Desiccant

Air lines to and from the air dryer must be at atmospheric pressure.
Release the air pressure from the air system completely before
performing maintenance.

Replace or rebuild the desiccant cartridge if water can no longer be absorbed. Consult your Caterpillar
dealer for service or replacement parts.

Rollover Protective Structure (ROPS)

Inspect ROPS/Tighten Bolts

Inspect for any loose or damaged bolts. Replace damaged bolts or missing bolts with original
equipment parts only. Tighten bolts to a torque of 740 ± 25 N·m (550 ± 20 lb ft).

NOTE: Apply oil to all ROPS bolt threads before installing. Failure to apply oil can result in
improper bolt torque.

Replace ROPS mounting supports if the ROPS rattles or makes a noise when the machine is operated
on a rough surface.

Do not straighten or repair by welding reinforcement plates to the ROPS.

Contact your Caterpillar dealer for repair of cracks in welds, castings or any metal section on the
ROPS.

Air Brake Warning Horn

Test

Bleed the air pressure off the system. The horn should sound. Repair if necessary.

Wheel Coolant

Check Coolant Level

With a lack of wheel coolant, personal injury or death can result. The
brakes can generate enough heat to burn the tire bead. A burning bead
produces gases inside the tire that can explode, endangering personnel
within 500 meters (1500 feet).

1. Position each tractor and scraper wheel so that coolant level/fill plug is level with the center line of
the axle.

2. Remove the plug. Maintain the wheel coolant level to the bottom of the plug opening with a
solution of 80% water and 20% Caterpillar antifreeze or any commercially available ethylene glycol-
type antifreeze.

3. Clean and install the level/fill plug.
