JOB 1: MACHINE SHOP (SPUR GEAR)

Required Materials
Cast iron circular gear blank with radius 60mm and 100mm length
with 50mm
Required Tools
Tuning and boring tools, Vernier clipper
Required Machine
Lathe machine, milling machine
Procedure
 Firstly, the raw circular gear blank is clamed at the machine.
 The outer diameter is then reduced to 100mm by chipping, and at
the center, the inner diameter is drilled 25mm, by using the lathe
machine.
 Then, the gear blank is placed under the cutting blade of the
machine to make the 48 teeth gear.
 The first cut of a tooth is made by turning 1 complete turn of 20
holes in the index plate and so do the rest cuts till all 48.
 The formula of dividing head=40/no. of teeth is used to make gear
teeth in milling machine.
Precaution
 The operation of the lathe machine must be learned from the
instructor before using.
 We should not remove the sward by hand.
 We must wear safety shoes, goggles, gloves and safety hat.
 While running the machines, taking measurements is strictly
forbidden.
4

Conclusion
 From machine shop, we knew the operation of lathe machine and
milling machine.
 We have known how to make the required spur gear.

JOB 2: CARPENTRY SHOP

Required Materials
Wood piece
Required Tools
Folding ruler, try square, firmer chisel, mortise chisel, iron plane, jack
plane vice, marking gauge, tenon saw, mallet or hammer
Required Machines
Vice
Procedure
 The wood piece is held firmly in the vice and by using jack plane or
any tool, adjacent surfaces of the wood piece are made smooth and
perpendicular with each other.
5

 Try square is used to check whether the surfaces are perpendicular

or not.
 The work piece is cut into two parts by using cross cut saw.
 Folding ruler and marking gauge are used to make marking for
mortise-tenon joint.
 On those two halves, unrequired parts are removed by using tenon
saw and firmer chisel.
 The finished two pieces are joined to get mortise-tenon joint.

3 of 4in x 2in mild steel sheets, mild steel sheet electrode (3.2 mm)
Required Tools
Electric cable or holder, thick gloves, face shield, earth cable or clamp,
chipping hammer
Required machines
DC generator machine
Procedure
 The two metals are aligned to make sure the edges line up well.
They should be smooth and clean.
 The electrode is conducted and let the metal arc started by tapping
or striking method.
 High temperature is generated about 5000 ° F from the power
source made the molten pool and the end of the electrode melt into
the pool forming the joint.
 The two metal sheets are connected at two edges by spotting
method not to move during welding.
 Then they are welded to make the T-Joint. Butt joint is also used by
the above Steps.
 After welding, the slags over the metal sheets are removed by using
the chipping hammer.
Precaution
 We should wear protective clothes and thick gloves to protect heat,
flame and spark.
 We need to have eyes and face protection because the light and the
gases produced during welding are harmful.
Conclusion
 The required butt joint and lap joint are obtained.

file, half chisel, tap, hack saw, half round file
Required Machines
 Vice
Procedure
 Firstly, using the center punch, ruler and try square, the needed
dimensions were marked on the given piece.
 The work piece is firmly tightened in the vice jaw and unneeded
side parts are removed by square file.
 Finally, the required square nut is finished.
Precaution
 Work piece should not use a file without handle and too much
pressure to tighten the vice jaw.
8

 We should be aware not to pass over the marking line.

Conclusion
 From the fitting shop, we get the knowledge how to file.
 We know how to use the fitting tools and how to make square nut.
 It gives us a lot of knowledge.
