PREFACE
Relleion data produced by the Indian Censu's has always been of an Immense Interest to
the socloloilsts, demographers, planners, administrators, research scholars as also laymen as the
ethnic composition of population helps them to understand the varied demographic features of
each community. At the 1981 Census, rellilon figures were based on the rellilon of the head
of household whereas, at the 1991 Census, the rellilon figures are based on an Individual basis
as was done durlni 1961 and 1971 Censuses. The present volume Is the outcome of arduous
compilation work done In various Regional Tabulation Offices of the State and brlnis out religion
data classified by sex and residence at State/Dlstrlct/Tahsll/TQwn level for six main relfilons as
well as 'other rellilons adn persuasion' and 'religions not stated'.
The task of census takfni In PunJab at the f 991 Census was a challenilni one. I express
my deep sense of iratltude to Sh. D.S. Jaspal, Director of Census Operations, Punjab for his untiring
efforts, able guidance and stewardship which resulted' In successful accomplishment of census taking
In 1991 In Punjab State.

INTRODUCTORY NOTE
It has been customary for the Indian Census to through question 8 of the Individual SUp, and editing
provide Information on the religious persuasions of Its and matching of the entry In col. 9 of the Household
people. Religion Is one of the basic cultural characterstlcs Schedule, which was done In four Regional Tabulation

"Match the entry In column 9.of the Household
Schedule for each member of the household with the
'Individual Slip', as the name suggest, Is canvassed corresponding entry against question 8 of the Indlvtdu,al
for every Individual In the country. Question 8 of the Slip. Please note that this check wUl be made for all
Individual Slip canvassed at the 1991 Census related types of households whether normal or Institutional or
to religion of a person. The religion of the Individual house less. If these ar~ not the same for any member
was recorded as returned by the respondent by using of the household, correct the entry in column 9 of the
following abbreviations: Household Schedule on the basis of entry in question
8 of the Individual Slip. Ifthe entry In either the IndMdual
H for Hindus Slip or the Household Schedule 15 missing for any member
of the household, copy the entry from the schedule in
M for Muslims
which it has been missed. If by chance the entry is
C for Christians blank in both the IndMdual Slip and the Household Schedule
S for Sikhs for any member of the household, look into the entries

Table C-9 on religion Included In this publication Table C-9 Is followed by two appedlces (appendix
corresponds to Table C-VII, Religion of 1961 and A & B) and one annexure. The figures of other
1971, and Table HH-15 of 1981. The only religions have been grouped together In column
difference Is that the figures on religion for 1961, 'Other religions and persuasions'. Appendix' A'
1971 and 1991 are based on the. religion of the contains details of other religions and persuasions
