out and given in the statements appended alongside
the absolute figures.
9. Ont of the seven taluks of Anantapur District
and three taluks of Kurno,ol District for which
village-Wise language da;ta are given in the appended
statements, linguistic maps relating to Kalyandrug~
Madakasira and Rayadrug taluks of Anantapur District
and Alur and Adoni taluks of Kurnool District are
att~ched to the relative statements. The map is
intended to show the location of ~n the census units in
the taluk. The location of the unit is indicated by the
location code number assigned to it for purposes of the
census enumeration of 1951 Census. The percentage
.of persons speaking the principal mother-tongue
languages in each unit to the total population o~ the
11nit has also been 'given below the location code

numb-=,r of the unit. The boundaries of units shown
are not to scale and are only approximate. They
serve to indicate the location and not the area or
contours. All the units in whioh a language other
than the principal language of the State predominates"
i.e., where the number of personS spealclng that langu-
age exceeds 50 per cent have been coloured. The
units in which none of the principal mother-tongue
languages preponderates have been marked with
broken lines. Uninhabited vill~ges have been indi-
cated by the letters' U.I.' put underneath the code
number of the llDjt. Units where the principal
language ()f the State predominates have been left
Uncoloured. It is hoped that the map will prove
useful for the purpose for which it is intended.
In the case of Penukonda, Hindupur, Kadiri and
-3-ooty talnks of Anantapur District and Pattikonda
taluk of Kurnool District it has been oonsidered
unnecessary to prepare linguistic maps as the villages
showing a predominance in the nnm ber of Kannada
speakers are but a few.
