Irene : More and more people now are talking about business. The word
‘business’ has been very popular not only among adults but among
young people as well. What is business actually?
Adler : In its very simplest meaning, business is any activity of making either
goods or services for money.
Irene : I don’t quite understand. Can you give an example?
Adler : Okay. This is an example. Mr. Watson wants to make a business. He
knows that people or society needs furniture. So he makes furniture and
sells it to people for money.
Irene : But he won’t be able to do it alone, will he?
Adler : He won’t. He must organize resources; he must buy logs of wood;
employs carpenters to make furniture, and brings the products to
markets, make sales and promotions and so on.
Irene : I see. Then, he needs money or capital to start the business.
Adler : Sure. He needs money. He can use his own money but he can also use
somebody’s money.
Irene : What do you mean by using somebody’s money?
Adler : For doing a business, someone can borrow money from his family, his
colleagues and friends, or from a bank.
Irene : But he has to pay interest.
Adler : It could be. If the business is successful, he can return the money and
pay interest. Besides, he also will have some profit.
Irene : Oh, it is very challenging, but we must be very careful because the
business may not always be successful.
Adler : You are right. Therefore, if you want to do business, you must plan it
carefully.
Irene : Sure, I will. Thank you very much for this wonderful conversation.
