1.0 GENERAL

1.1 Scope

This document presents the design calculations performed for the chainhawse of the MISC Single
Point Turret (SPT) under design and fatigue conditions.

1.2 Anchoring System

The FPSO vessel will be securely held in position by a 9 legs moorings system in a 3 by 3 legs
system at 120°.

The anchor chains terminate at the turret in chainhawse assemblies. The chain is ABS R3S
Studless Common Link and its size is 95 mm.

Each chainhawse is fitted into hooks via self-lubricated bearings, which allows the chainhawse to
rotate and align with the chains. A tubular guide trumpet ensures proper alignment of the chain
during tensioning and helps the articulation of the chainhawse.

2.0 DESIGN DATA

2.1 Static Strength Analysis

Three cases are analyzed:

2.1.1 Case 1: Maximum Breaking Strength Case

In this case, the maximum breaking strength of the chain is considered as axial load acting on the
chainhawse.

FA = FBS = 8165 kN from Ref. [3].

2.1.2 Case 2: Damaged Case:

In this case, the maximum axial load in damaged case is considered (100 Year Storm, one leg
broken).

FA = FD = 5327 kN

The transverse load acting on the chain guide due to the chain angle (α = 5.5°) is:

Ftr = FD x sin(α) = 510.6 kN

Note: for the check of the bearing pressure on the chockfast resin the maximum operating load case
is also considered (100 Year Storm, no leg broken):

FA = 4307 kN

Ftr = 412.8 kN

2.1.3 Case 3: Installation Case

The strength of the chainhwase body is checked under installation loads when the chain is being
tensioned. Depending on the angle of the chain, lateral forces due to tensioning are induced on the
chainhawse. The computation of these forces is presented in Appendix 3.

The case 10a of option B is governing.

The maximum installation forces listed below are considered:

Reaction R1 = 283.7 kN

Reaction R2 = 86.6 kN

2.2 Fatigue Analysis

The fatigue calculation is performed for a design life of 20 years.

The fatigue damaged is assessed by determining maximum principle stressed derived from a unitary
load case:

FA = 1000 kN

The damage resulting from this F.E. analysis is summarized in Appendix 2.

2.3 Factor Of Safety

For the Maximum Breaking Strength Case and Stall Capacity of the winch:

η = 0.9

For the Damaged Case, according with Ref. [i]:

6.0 CHAINHAWSE BODY AND CHAIN GUIDE DESIGN

The analysis of the chainhawse body and the chain guide is achieved by means of F.E. model.

6.1 Model Description

The chainhawse body is modeled using solid elements, while the chain guide is modeled using plate
elements.

The contact between the trunnions and the bushes is modeled using a thin layer of elements with
compression only material.

Compressive load at the ratchet/chainhawse body interface has been modeled applying a pressure
on the element in contact.

Stresses generated at the connection between the chain guide and the chainhawse casting are
induced by the transverse force and the load required to overcome the friction torque generated on
the bushes. The transverse force is applied at the chain link/chain guide contact location whereas
the rotating force due to friction at the bushes is applied at the bottom end of the chain guide.

The nodes located at the periphery of the bushes modeled over a 180° sector are fully constrained.

The F.E. model is presented in Appendix 1.

6.2 Loading Conditions

6.2.1 Design Loads

The table below summarizes the loads applied in the F.E. model for the breaking strength case and
the damaged case.

6.3.2 Fatigue Analysis

The critical locations for the fatigue analysis are identified in the following sketch.

Location 2
Location 1

Location 3

Location 4

The cumulated damages for these locations are calculated by means of the spreadsheet shown in
Appendix 3.

For each fatigue-sensitive detail, the principal stress variation (∆σ0) due to unitary load case is
evaluated. For any sea state (i∈[1 to N], N = number sea state) in the long-term distribution, the
corresponding principal stress range is calculated as follows:

γi
∆σ i = ∆σ 0 ×
γ0

Fatigue damages are calculated in accordance with the DNV Classification note 30.2, for a fatigue
life of 20 years.

The maximum principal stress occurring in the chainhawse is:

σ = 100 MPa

Considering conservatively a detail fatigue F2, the maximum total damage in the chainhawse is:

η = 0.006 << 0.33 OK

7.0 LOCKING BEAM DESIGN

7.1 Design Load

Winch Characteristics:

The locking beams are designed to withstand the maximum load that can be generated on the
chainhawse in case of chain jamming.

The characteristics of the winch are derived from Ref. [4].

• Stall Capacity = 89 tonnes

• Safe Working Load = 68 tonnes

Note: the installation loads shown in Appendix 3 are lower than the Safe Working Load (max exiting
tension is 48 tonnes). Therefore the strength of the locking system is checked against the installation
loads when checked against the safe working load.

Minimum Weight of Chain to be pulled:

The minimum length of chain to be pulled is:

L = 48 m (beginning of the tensioning in low water Ref. [I]).

The weight of the wet chain is: 158.5 kg/m

The minimum weight of chain to be pulled is:

Wchain = 158.5 x 48 = 7608 kg

devatex is a high performance self

lubricating sliding material with a
glass-fibre reinforced carrying layer.
The machinable sliding layer consists
of fibres which are embedded in epoxy
resin. The resin carries PTFE as
lubricant for exellent tribological
performance.
devatex bearings are available up to
1000 mm and are characterized by a
very high corrosion- and wear-
resistance. They are insensitive to
contamination as well as to vibrations
and shock loads. In addition to
standard dimension special
geometries can be machined.
Max. possible outer diameter 1000
mm. devatex™ flat material:
available 07/99

Water turbines, earth moving railroad applications, shut-off values,

equipment, hydromechanical chemical industry and many more.
