You may submit your assessments as edited compilations, individual clips or bit by bit as your
puppy gains confidence in each element. You are not being judged on your videoing or film
making skills but each clip should clearly shoe the puppy fully in the frame and the
environment it is performing in.
Luring is allowed in this level but the puppy should show he or she is actively engaging in the
task not simply following a treat blindly.
On successful completion of the title Puppy and handler partnerships will be awarded a
commemorative certificate and a beautiful rosette display and mark their achievements.
The Tasks
Show your puppy is happy having his collar removed and put on. Also show the tag to
camera that it has the correct identification required by your country’s laws.
In the UK the Control of Dogs Order 1992 states that any dog in a public place must
wear a collar with the name and address (including postcode) of the owner engraved
or written on it, or engraved on a tag. Bear minimum is surname, house number,
road name and postcode. (Telephone numbers are not compulsory but can be very
helpful in returning your dog back to you in an emergency.)
Show your puppy recognises his or her name. Puppy should at least look at handler,
turning his or her head or taking a couple of steps forward towards the handler.
Play with your puppy in an age appropriate manner. This can be with toys or food
ideally both.
Basic positions. Positions need only be adopted briefly but show you puppy
understands cues for sit, down and stand. Cues can be either verbal or visual.
Show your puppy his happy to be around another dog. He or she should be willing to
still focus on the handler with the distraction of another dog in the vicinity.
Food manners. Throughout the assessment videos the puppy should be rewarded on
correct completion of the tasks but should not snatch the treat and should take it in a
controlled polite manner.
Show your puppy is happy to greet an adult they are not very familiar with. Puppy
should not be overly wary or back off. Equally should not be jumping up excessively,
all 4 paws should be on the floor before the puppy is greeted by the person.
Show your puppy is happy to be handled and groomed. Puppy should allow handling
of its body and inspection by its owner. Mild fidgeting and avoidance is acceptable. A
couple of strokes with a soft brush is satisfactory.
Loose lead walking. At least 20 paces walking on lead next to handler, no formal
position is required, including at least one 90 degree turn. Puppy should be willingly
going with handler not being overly coaxed or pulling excessively. The occasional
bounce or taut lead are acceptable at this stage.
Puppy recall. This can be done in a safe enclosed area or on a long line. The handler
should in some way distance themselves from the puppy by at least three to five
paces. They should recall, praise and secure the puppy.
Show your puppy is happy and confident to walk across 5 different textured surfaces.
2 passes of each surface should be shown.
10 second stay. With puppy still on lead or in a safe enclosed environment the lead (if
wearing one) should be dropped quietly and handler takes 2 steps either to the side
or front after signalling to the puppy either verbally or visually to “stay”. Puppy
should remain in the same position (Stand, sit or down – handler’s choice) until
handler returns to side and releases.
Cost of assessment, title certificate and commemorative rosette is £15 for this award.
On the next page I have included a handy table for you to print and record your
