UNDERSTANDING GOLD KARAT

What is Karat?
A karat is a measure of purity when referring to gold.
It is represented by the little numbers stamped on a piece
of gold in the format of "xxK" or "xxKT". The numbers refer
to the type of gold and to the actual gold content in the
particular piece of jewelry. Here’s more information on
karats:

 Karat is a measurement of the ratio of gold to other metals or alloys.

 Karats are measured on a scale from 0 to 24.
 The higher the karat number, the more gold there is and the less other
metal content.
 Other metals and alloys could include copper, nickel (not common
anymore), silver, or palladium.

With this in mind, 24-karat gold is the purest gold you can buy.

Why Mix Pure Gold With Other Metals?

There are two extremely important and practical reasons for mixing golds with
other metals. These are:
 Hardness
Pure gold is an extremely soft metal and will knock and scratch very easily.
This makes it impractical for daily wear. By mixing the pure gold with a
harder metal, the gold becomes much more hard wearing and suitable for
rings and other jewelry items that are subject to the rigors of daily life.
Gold that has been mixed with other metals is also much less likely to
wear down as quickly as pure gold. This makes it a much more practical
choice for all types of jewelry.
 Cost
By mixing pure gold with other, less costly metals the price of the raw
materials comes down. This is reflected in the price of the finished item of
jewelry. A 10 karat ring, for instance, should cost significantly less than
the 18 karat version.

Other Important Information About Karat

It is the other metals contained in gold that can sometimes cause an irritation or
leave a mark on skin. Some people find that they have an allergy to gold,
although in reality they probably have an allergy to the metal that has been
mixed with gold. Someone who has an allergy to low karat golds will probably
find that this disappears with higher quality golds. Likewise, the light patina that
is left on the skin when wearing low karat golds will also disappear when wearing
higher quality golds.

B. Exercises for skill subjects/Analysis questions using HOTS for

content subjects
i. Exercise 1
Directions: Write T if the statement below is true and F if it is false. Then, on the
blank provided, give a short justification.
1. The lower the karat, the stronger it will be, while higher karat gold
will be softer.

2. Lower karat gold is tarnish-resistant. Higher karat gold is less
resistant to tarnishing.

3. Lower karat gold will appear more yellow.

4. Lower karat gold is not worth as much monetarily. Higher karat
gold is more valuable because it is purer.

ii. Exercise 2
Knowing the number of karats is key to calculating the gold content on your
own. Say you purchase a ring that is 14K gold. Since the number amount of
karats you can have is 24K, divide the 14 Karats by the 24. You will get .583.
This means that the gold is 58.3% pure.

Directions: Base on the information above, fill out the Gold Purity Conversion
Chart below.

C. Assessment/Application
Directions: With your knowledge about the gold karat, read the situation below
and provide your explanation.

You found a Bohemian garnet jewelry from Europe that is stamped 826 and 925.
What do those numbers mean? And what does it mean it the jewelry’s color is
pink?
