A. Readings
i. Unlocking of terms:
1. control- set of observations used as a reference and compared to experimental
observations in order to show that the result is due to the experimental
treatment
2. conclusion- a decision based on the data from an experiment
3. hypothesis- an idea about the system being examined
4. experiment- using a set of observations to test a hypothesis
5. variable- Name for the type of value measured that may vary in an experiment
6. data- the numerical values recorded during an experiment or observation
7. theory- a well-supported set of observations and explanations for natural
events
ii. Read the lyrics of the song below and take note of the processes in the scientific
method.

Scientific Method Song by: Have Fun Teaching

Scientific method (Scientific method)
Scientific method (Scientific method)
First you make an observation of the world around
Take notes and record all the things that you found
Then you ask a simple question something that you wanna learn
Then you form a hypothesis to explain what you observed
Then you make a prediction about how it's gonna go
Do a test with a control and variable
Then you analyze the data and draw a conclusion
Do the scientific method to avoid all confusion

iii. Key points:

What is the Scientific Method?
The scientific method refers to a set of procedures that scientists follow in
order to solve a problem or to gain knowledge around the world. It is a
systematic way of studying the world in a scientific manner. It allows scientists
to minimize errors and increase confidence in the results of research and
studies.

The Scientific Method

Identify the problem The scientific method starts when you ask a
(Question) question about something that you observe:
How, What, When, Who, Which, Why, or Where?
Formulate a hypothesis A hypothesis is an educated guess about how
(Hypothesis) things work. It is an attempt to answer your
question with an explanation that can be tested.
A good hypothesis allows you to then make a
prediction:
"If _____[I do this] _____, then _____[this]_____ will
happen."
Test the hypothesis Your experiment tests whether your prediction is
(Experiment) accurate and thus your hypothesis is supported
or not. It is important for your experiment to be
a fair test. You conduct a fair test by making
sure that you change only one factor at a time
while keeping all other conditions the same.
You should also repeat your experiments several
times to make sure that the first results weren't
just an accident.
Gather and interpret data Once your experiment is complete, you collect
(Analysis) your measurements and analyze them to see if
they support your hypothesis or not.
Draw a conclusion Draw a conclusion regarding your hypothesis.
(Conclusion) Does your data support or disprove your initial
hypothesis? Usually, if the data disproves the
hypothesis, scientists will form a new hypothesis
based on new data and/or further research.
Communicate results Professional scientists do almost exactly the
(Discussion) same thing by publishing their final report in a
scientific journal or by presenting their results
on a poster or during a talk at a scientific
meeting.

Example 1:
Question: What is the fastest route to school?
Hypothesis: Taking Main Street to Elm Street to avoid the light on Maple
Avenue is the fastest route to school.
Experiment: Drive to school at the same time each day at the same speed,
taking a variety of routes. Make sure to include the hypothesis route. Record the
time for each route.
Analysis: Analyze the different route times, selecting the fastest.
Conclusion: Determine whether your route hypothesis was correct.
Discussion: Share the results of your test to help others get to school on time.

B. Exercises for skill subjects/Analysis questions using HOTS for

content subjects
i. Exercise 1
Directions: Provide the letter of the definition that matches the scientific terms
below.
ii. Exercise 2
Directions: Using the numbers 1-6, indicate the order of events in using the
scientific method.

C. Assessment/Application
Directions: Sheryl’s Mom works third shift so she sleeps during the day. Sheryl
and her friends like to listen to loud music after school but they don’t want to
disturb Sheryl’s Mom. Put the step number next to each step of the scientific
method for this problem.
1. Ask a question
2. Form a hypothesis
3. List materials needed
4. Decide the steps in the procedure
5. Perform the experiment
6. Analyze the results
7. Draw a conclusion

_____ She plans to stand outside her Mom’s room and measure the sound.
_____ She knows she needs her CD player and the loudest CD she likes.
_____ Sheryl wonders how loudly she and her friends can play music without
disturbing her Mom.
_____ Sheryl decides that half volume is still too loud.
_____ She plans to turn on the CD player in the rec room with her CD at half
volume.
_____ One day when her Mom isn’t sleeping, Sheryl tries the experiment.
_____ Sheryl thinks that half volume should be low enough.
_____ Standing outside her Mom’s room she can still hear the music.
