What Is an Adjective?
Adjectives are words that describe the qualities or states of being of nouns: enormous, doglike,
silly, yellow, fun, fast. They can also describe the quantity of nouns: many, few, millions, eleven.

Positive Degree
The positive degree does not compare things, animals, places, or people. It is the simple form of
the adjective.
Examples
 A butterfly is a beautiful insect.
 The boy is honest.

Comparative Degree
The comparative degree is used for comparing two things, animals, places, or people. The word
than usually goes with the adjective when written in sentences.
Example
 A bee is bigger than a fly.
 A diamond necklace is more expensive than a pearl necklace.

Superlative Degree
The superlative degree is used for comparing three or more things, animals, places, or people.
The word the is placed before the superlative degree when written in sentences.
Example
 Asia is the biggest among the seven continents.
 The Sahara is the world’s largest desert.
These are two ways of forming the comparative degree of adjective.
1. by adding -er at the end of a short adjective.
Examples
 thin – thinner
 big – bigger
 small – smaller
2. by adding more before an adjective that usually has two or more syllables.
Examples
 delicious – more delicious
 difficult – more difficult
 popular – more popular

The word than goes with the adjective.


Examples
1. Vangie is thinner than Lovelle.
2. My book is more expensive than your book.

These are also two ways of forming the superlative degree of adjective.
1. by adding -est at the end of a short adjective.
Examples
 thin – thinnest
 big – biggest
 smart – smartest
2. by adding most before an adjective that has two or more syllables.
Examples

 difficult – most difficult
 popular – most popular
The word the usually comes before the adjective.
Examples:
 Vangie is the thinnest of them all.
 My watch is the most expensive.
