VI SEM. B.E. (MECHANICAL/ IP ENGG.) DEGREE END SEMESTER

EXAMINATIONS MAY/JUNE 2010

SUBJECT: ELEMENTS OF MECHATRONICS SYSTEMS (MEE-310/MME-326)

REVISED CREDIT SYSTEM
(19 / 5 / 2010)
Time: 3 Hours. MAX.MARKS: 50

Instructions to Candidates:
 Answer ANY FIVE FULL questions.
 Draw the sketches using pencil only

1.A Define the term “Mechatronics”. Explain with a block diagram the
mechatronics system components. (4)

1.B List and explain the methods by which the SCR can be triggered. (3)

1.C What is filtering? Explain with neat sketches the different types of filters
available. (3)

2.A A water bottling plant uses a conveyor to transfer the bottles from the
filling station to the packaging station. A light sensor is used to sense the
movement of the bottles on the conveyor. The light sensor is fixed at a (2)
particular location and the output voltage from the light sensor is
connected to a counter circuit which counts the no of bottle passing
through the light sensor. Once eight bottles are passed the conveyor
changes over to second transfer line. Design a decoder-circuit for this
arrangement.

2.B Design a 3-bit absolute encoder disc pattern using gray code. (4)

2.C What are the different addressing modes available in 8085

microprocessor? Give examples for each. (4)

3.A Justify and explain (2)

i. Encoder used for velocity measurement
ii. Grey code is preferred over binary code system

3.B Write a program to evaluate the following expression in an 8085

microprocessor. (P*Q)/R (4)

3.C Write a short note on
(4)
i. Artificial neural network ii. Fuzzy logic
4.A The component is placed in the fixture by hand. The start signal causes
cylinder 1.0 (A) to move the die into workpiece. After this, slots are (5)
punched by cylinders 2.0 (B), 3.0 (C), 4.0 (D) simultaneously. After last
punching operation, all punching cylinders simultaneously retract
together followed by 1.0 (A).The punched component is removed by
hand. Draw the manual pneumatic circuit diagram for the above
mentioned operation. Refer figure Q 4(A) for more details.

4.B What is meant by piezoelectricity? Explain with a neat sketch the

piezoelectric sensor (3)

4.C If the feedback resistance is made zero in case of a non-inverting (2)

amplifier, what will be the resulting circuit? Explain the necessity of such
a circuit with one practical example.

5.A Explain the working of laser Doppler anemometer . (3)

5.B Explain with a neat component sketch the working of a double solenoid (3)
3/2 spool valve.

5.C With a neat sketch explain the working of a 5 bit R-2R digital to analog (4)
converter.

6.A Illustrate the functioning of the following 8085 instructions: (2)

i. SUB M ii. MOV A,M

6.B With a neat block diagram explain the microcontroller of a domestic (4)
washing machine.

6.C Draw a ladder logic diagram for the cylinder sequence A+ B+ C+ B- C- A- (4)
