List five core competences expected of a chartered engineer and describe which aspects of an
engineer’s development are covered by these competences

As chartered engineer there are no of ethics that should be learned and preceding tech solution to
the society.

They should be able to plan and give leadership in proceeding engineering solutions to the society.
As a char eng should be able to conduct his profession efficiently and effectively reaching the goals
of the organization.

Efficiently means with correct, with least cost hand highest quality conforming the standards and
specifications promulgated by the relevant institutions.

Effectively means execute work to the right design with quality assurance conforming to standards
of the quality required by the various codes such as ISO 9000, ISO 9002 etc…

It is known that communication is at the heart of a functional organization. Good leadership skills
are needed to direct his term to execute an engineering solution assign to him. Communication
provide necessary skills to perform basic management functions namely Planning, Leading,
Delegating and Controlling of the engineering solution assign to him efficiently and effectively.

It is a paramount important that engineer learn and acquire communication skills from the society
by interacting with the society to successfully reach the goals of the organization.

3. The engineer shall ensure health, safety and welfare of the public in the application of engineering
profession of the society. Engineers in the execution of their profession must work towards
maintaining the quality of the environment by working towards the sustainable development and
green economy.

Engineer shall not in any way work towards the destruction of the natural existence of the
environment. It shall always mitigate harmful effect of the engineering solution the environment.
All chartered engineers are required to work towards the environment of lifestyle of the society in
which he lives. In this process they continue to innovate and conduct research to reduce cost of
production by maximizing the uses of the world resources.

In this process the engineers shall select appropriate issue in the society and conduct research to
provide better lifestyle with least cost, optimum efficiency protecting the values of the environment.

4. The engineer shall all steps to put into porches what they have leant in their academic carrier in to
practice in the society. For these engineers are required to understand the principles of engineering
applications, promotions, advancement of the technologies by publishing engineering periodicals,
disseminating his knowledge on new technologies to the fellow members.

5. A chartered engineer is governed by 8 codes of ethics making him abide by those ethics. So that
he conducts his profession recognizing the social, cultural his profession required by the society as a
competent provider of engineering solutions.

Those conducts provides imparters to engineer to stand as a professional segment with dignity as a
profession a chartered engineer is a one that is pass by the countries legislation.

Sri Lanka as other countries has own legal system. Our law comprises of civil court procedure and
the criminal court procedure. However other of conduct of engineers are not in particulars
described under our legal procedure. It is therefore necessary a set of code of conduct are essential
to guide professional engineer with limits of his area of expertise. The 8 codes of ethics described
what should be the conduct of a chartered engineer as per by laws of the IESL. IESL is an institution
established for the promossion of the engineer training of engineering and maintain the standard of
professional engineers IESL was born as a law passed by the parliament in the year 1978. It has a
legal entity and breaching codes of ethics could bring about
