Instructional At the end of this lesson the students will be able to:

ENGAGE Ask students what themes they found in the novel or what stuck

This will get the conversation rolling.
Identify 2-3 themes as a class.
EXPLORE Have the students complete the first page of the handout
Activities (attached), focusing on similarities and differences between
themselves and the novel.
EXPLAIN Have students that want to share, share out loud to the class. Talk
Activities about how their similarities and differences relate to the themes.
Then the students will continue onto the second page of the
handout.
ELABORATE In small groups answer these questions:
Activities - Why did the author choose these themes for her novel?
- How were these themes represented? Cite evidence from
the novel.
On your own:
- Choose one theme and write about how it made you feel
or how you relate to it.
EVALUATE Define racism and colorism and site examples of how it is shown
Activities in the book. What is the difference between these two terms?
How do they both affect Genesis and other characters throughout
