Panel/Quote Analysis

Page #: 51 Panel #: All Panel description or any quoted text: “My parents were
so shocked, that they forgot to spare me this experience.

CONTEXT (2 sentences minimum) – give a complete summary of what is happening at this point in the
story / summarize plot

At this point of the story, Satrapi’s family member and her uncle have been released from prison
because he was a political prisoner. He tells the stories of fellow inmates but for Satrapi they are
explicit memories. Meaning that he talks about prisoners dying from being tortured.

ANALYSIS (4 sentences minimum) - Determine which aspect (text, graphic weight, figures) is the most
interesting to analyze and explain the significance or focus on a particular literary element (symbolism,
characterization, theme, etc.) to analyze.

The most interesting aspect in this panel to analyze was the shading and borderless splash that Satrapi
includes in her story. With the shading aspect, we notice that Satrapi wants the readers focus and
attention on the text that is given, so with the discussion that is happening between her uncle and
Satrapi herself. Then it goes and transitions into a borderless splash. This reveals to the audience of a
more brutal situation and now Satrapi is exposed to this.

CONNECTION (2 sentences minimum) - Explain how the panel is significant to a bigger meaning in the
chapter/novel.

This panel is significant in so many ways but one major way is that now Satrapi is exposed to brutal
and gruesome details about the revolution. This sets up Satrapi to be desensitized and in her mind she
would have to grow up/be more mature about the events that are happening.
Analysis - Sentence stems to use when analyzing the graphic novel

- In panel ___, the character/situation is portrayed as _________________through the author’s use of [elements].
- The use of the element _____________ in panel _______ suggests ________________.
- The purpose of the element in panel ___________ is to ________________.
Analysis Example: In panel one, the author uses (puts next to each other) heavy graphic weight and light graphic weight. The women
in support of the veil are represented by the heavy graphic weight, while the protesters are drawn in the light graphic weight. Satropi
uses this element to suggest that one side has a negative feeling (the veil) and the other side has a positive feeling (freedom). The
author’s bias towards freedom is seen because of the light graphic weight she gives to the people demonstrating against the veil.

In panel four, the author uses a borderless splash. The graphics reveal to the reader about the brutal toruture that happened
to war prisoners in different sizes to show the amount of pain that occured. Satrapi uses this borderless splash to emphasize tp
the reader how gruesome the torture was and how now at a young age she is exposed to such explict content with no filter. The
author uses these graphics to show how at a young age she had to mature and understand such adult topics to understand how
pressing the revolution situation is.
