MODULE IN GEOMETRY

Second Quarter/ Week 6/ Day 2

OBJECTIVE: Illustrates the properties of rectangle, square and rhombus.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

• Illustrating the Properties of Rectangle, Square and Rhombus

In this lesson, you will learn that aside from the properties of parallelogram which
are true to rectangle, rhombus and square, there are properties which are true only to
specific kind of parallelogram.

TRY TO DISCOVER!

Certain parallelograms have special names. Consider the following:

A rectangle is a parallelogram A square is a parallelogram A rhombus is a parallelogram

whose four angles are all right with four congruent sides whose four sides are
angles. Its diagonals are and four congruent angles. congruent and whose angles
congruent. The diagonals form 2 are oblique (acute or obtuse).
isosceles triangles. Its diagonals bisect each
other and are perpendicular
to each other.

• If a parallelogram is equilateral, is it necessarily a square?

• If a parallelogram is equiangular, what may it be?
• If a parallelogram is both equilateral and equiangular, what may it be?
When is a parallelogram a rectangle? A square? A rhombus?
Of all the quadrilaterals, the rectangle is the most commonly used. In a rectangle, all the
four angles have equal measures. Since the sum of the measures of the angles of a quadrilateral
is 360, then we can say that:
• All the four angles of a rectangle are right angles.
• All rectangles are parallelograms.

The figure at the right is a rectangle with its two diagonals

̅̅̅̅̅
𝐾𝑁 and ̅̅̅
𝐼𝐷 . Since KIND is a parallelogram, then diagonals bisect
each other. What can you say about the diagonals of a rectangle?
Notice that ̅̅̅̅̅
𝐾𝑁 is a side of ⊿𝐾𝐼𝑁 and ̅̅̅̅
𝐼𝐷 is a side of ⊿𝐼𝐾𝐷.
Can we show that ⊿𝐾𝐼𝑁 ≅ ⊿𝐼𝐾𝐷? If the triangles are congruent,
then the diagonals (as corresponding parts) are also congruent.
Therefore, we say that the diagonals of a rectangle are congruent.

Quadrilateral GLAD is a square. All the four angles are

right angles and the four sides are congruent.
Draw the diagonal of GLAD. What kind of triangles are
formed? From these, we can say that a diagonal divides a
square into two isosceles right triangles.

Quadrilateral GLOW is a rhombus. All angles of a

rhombus are oblique (either acute or obtuse) and the four sides
are congruent. Recall that the diagonals of a rhombus bisect
each other. What other relationship do the diagonals of a
rhombus have? Are the diagonals congruent? Are they
perpendicular to each other?

Properties of the Diagonals of Special Quadrilaterals

• In a rectangle, diagonals are congruent.
• In a square, diagonals are congruent, perpendicular and bisect opposite angles.
• In a rhombus, diagonals are perpendicular to each other.
• The diagonals of a rhombus bisect the opposite angles.
