LATERAL TIES- EXAMPLE
A building has a series of 26 square columns having a cross-sectional dimension
of 30 x 30 cm with 8pcs 20mm. Vertical reinforcing bars for each column. Make
an order of 10mm steel bars required for making the lateral ties.

methods, without the prior written permission of the owner, except for personal academic use and certain other noncommercial uses permitted by copyright law.
LATERAL TIES- EXAMPLE
SOLUTION:
1. Determine the spacing of the lateral ties
16 x 20mm = 320 mm or 32cm
48 x 10mm = 480mm or 48cm
The shortest side of the column is = 30cm

2. Adopt the 30cm. Spacing

3. Determine the number or lateral ties in one column

7.00m ht / 0.30 = 23.3 pcs

methods, without the prior written permission of the owner, except for personal academic use and certain other noncommercial uses permitted by copyright law.
LATERAL TIES- EXAMPLE
SOLUTION:
4. The 23pcs is the distance between the lateral ties, what we
need is the number of ties in one column, so, we add one to
be exact.
23 + 1 = 24pcs
5. Solve for the total ties of the 26 columns
26 x 24 = 624pcs
6. Find the length of one lateral ties.
By inspection = 1.20m long

methods, without the prior written permission of the owner, except for personal academic use and certain other noncommercial uses permitted by copyright law.
LATERAL TIES- EXAMPLE
SOLUTION:
7. Determine the number of 1.20m cut from a 6.00m steel bar
6.00 / 1.20 = 5pcs

8. Divide the result of 5 by result of 7

624 / 5 = 124.8 say 125pcs

9. Order : 125 pcs of 10mm x 6.00m steel bars

STIRRUPS FOR BEAMS and GIRDERS-
EXAMPLE
A concrete beam with a cross-sectional dimension of 25 x 40cm requires 10mm
open stirrups spaces as shown in figure. Prepare the order of 10mm steel bars
for stirrups of 8 beams with the same category

No part of this material may be reproduced, distributed, or transmitted in any form or by any means, including photocopying, recording, or other electronic or mechanical
methods, without the prior written permission of the owner, except for personal academic use and certain other noncommercial uses permitted by copyright law.
STIRRUPS FOR BEAMS and GIRDERS-
EXAMPLE
SOLUTION:
1. By direct counting, there are 24 stirrups at 98cm say 1.00m long
2. Total number of stirrups
24 x 8 beams = 192 pcs
3. Referring to table (on the next slide) for a m long stirrups using a
m long steel bars,
Divide: 192/5 = 38.4pcs 10mm x 5.00mm
Or using a 6.00m long steel bars
Divide: 192/6 = 32.0pcs 10mm x 6.00m
Order: 32pcs of 10mm x 6.00m steel bars

TWO WAY SLAB- EXAMPLE
From the figure below, determine the number of 13mm diameter steel bar and
tie wire required

STIRRUPS FOR BEAMS and GIRDERS-
EXAMPLE
SOLUTION:
1. Solve for the main reinforcement
(3.60 / 0.10) + 1 = 37 pcs
2. There are two-way run
37 x 2 = 74pcs steel bars
3. For cut bars @ 1.87 long there are 4pcs cut in one 7.50 steel bar
74 / 4 = 18.5 pcs steel bars
4. Temperature bars at 1.80m span
(1.80 / 0.25) + 1 = 8.2 pcs

No part of this material may be reproduced, distributed, or transmitted in any form or by any means, including photocopying, recording, or other electronic or mechanical
methods, without the prior written permission of the owner, except for personal academic use and certain other noncommercial uses permitted by copyright law.
STIRRUPS FOR BEAMS and GIRDERS-
EXAMPLE
SOLUTION:
5. Multiply by 4 sides at 2 layes
8.2 x 8 = 65.6 pcs
6. Summary total of Step 2, 3 and 5
74 + 18.5 + 65.6 = 158 pcs
Second Solution by the Area Method
1. Area of the floor slab = 51. 84 sq.m
2. Reference from table (see next slide), for 7.50m steel bars @ 100m
spacing
51.84 x 3.050 = 158 pcs
3. Order: 158pcs 13mm x 7.50m steel bars

STIRRUPS FOR BEAMS and GIRDERS-
EXAMPLE
SOLUTION:
Solve for No. 16 GI wire @ 0.30m

1. Referring to Table 3-9

51.84 x 0.437 = 22.65 say 23 kilos
