PROVE-ABILITY

A PERFORMANCE TASK IN
MATHEMATICS 8

4TH QUARTER S.Y 2020-2021

LEONARD V. MARQUEZ
Math is present in everyday life and can be used in any
situation. Probability is a mathematical concept in which people
use more often than they know. In my case I have used
probability more outside of math class then I realized. Probability
consists of multiple concepts mostly about the occurrence of
events. It is really inevitable how probability is essential in a
game degree and how it is used properly in order to determine
events. In this performance task we will realize how probability
will be most beneficial especially when we would like to
calculate our chances. Let’s go and discover it in the following
tasks!
PROVE-ABILITY!

TASK 1:
“Search for a game (TV Show, game applications and etc.),
explain its mechanics, and find its probability of winning the
jackpot prize”

Title of the Game: “B-I-N-G-O”

Mechanics of the Game:
Players will have cards with numbers on them in a 5x5 grid
corresponding to the five letters in the word B-I-N-G-O. The gamemaster
will draw at random one letter with corresponding number at a time and it
continues until one player completes a B-I-N-G-O pattern, such as a line
with five letters vertical, horizontal or diagonal row on one of their cards and
wins the prize.
Probability of Winning:
The probability of winning in playing B-I-N-G-O will depend on the
number of cards I’m playing and the numbers of cards on play. The more
cards in play, the lower the chances of winning. My probability of winning is
calculated by taking the number of cards I’m going to play divided by the
total number of cards in play. So, if there are 100 cards in play and I have 5
cards, my chances of winning can be found in this solution:
Probability FORMULA= Number of Favorable Outcomes/ Total Number of
Outcomes
= 5/ 100
= 0.05 or 5%
TASK 2:
“Create a game which involves probability. Enumerate the
mechanics of the game and let one of your friends or family
members play the game. Record a video of the game”

Title of the Game: “Spot your Money”

Mechanics of the Game:
In this game, the materials to be used are 10 cups, small ball and 1
long table. Those 10 cups which will be placed on one end of the table
arranged in a pyramid pattern. Each cup will have random bills or coins
inside. 2 cups contain the jackpot money. Players will stand on the other
end of the table and once signal is set, they will throw the ball and try to
shoot it on the cup that they desire. Wherever cup their ball falls, they will
get the money inside the cup. The player who will get the jackpot price will
win the game. Players will have 2 tries.
Probability of Winning:
The probability of winning in playing the game “Spot your Money” can
be calculated by taking the number of cups which contains the jackpot prize
divided by the total number of cups in the table. So, if there are 10 cups in
play and there are only 2 cups which contains the jackpot prize, my
chances of winning it can be found in this solution:
Probability FORMULA= Number of Favorable Outcomes/ Total Number of
Outcomes
= 2/ 10
= 0.2 or 20%
*The video file of the game is in the file folder
TASK 3:
“Given your available garments (tops, bottom, shoe
wear),determine how many possible outfits could you come up
with. Pose a picture in your 10 best outfits”

Upon counting my available garments, I found out that I have 5

different tops, 5 pants and 2 pairs of shoes. If I am going to calculate how
many possible outfits will I have, I will be using the multiplication principle if
I plan on getting dressed using one of my tops, one of 5 pants and one of
2pairs of shoes. For each of 4 tops, I combine this with one of 5 pants for
25 possibilities so far. And each of these can be matched up with one of my
2 pairs of shoes for a total of 5 x 5 x 2 = 50 outfits.
Out of those 50 outfits that I can choose from, here is my top 10 best
outfits

MY 10 BEST OUTFITS
INSIGHTS:

No one can predict the future (yet). But probability helps us make
reasonable assumptions about future events based on their
likelihood. Probabilities affect the biggest and smallest decisions
of people’s lives. Its usefulness is massive.
