Know Your Masks Before Using One

The popularity of masks began far before the pandemic started due to environmental reasons.
They are considered as a vital protective barrier in polluted cities. As the pandemic started,
wearing face masks was the only way to prevent its spread. So, face masks became
mandatory, and people started wearing different types of coverings including bandana, home
made masks and disposable medical masks. As the pandemic kept getting longer, so did the
innovation of better masks to suit comfort, enhance safety and improve fashion quotient.
Now, with wide range of options available in the market, you must be confused of what
should be an appropriate buying option. Read more to get an idea on the different types of
masks and their effectiveness.
 Homemade cloth mask: These masks are made by sewing layers of fabric, made to
give a snuggly fit across face and nose. It’s effectiveness largely depends on its
construction, which increases with the number of layers it is made of.
 T-shirt masks: Being cheap & easier to make, many tutorials are available online on
how to make T-shirt masks. As the material is stretchy, it conforms well to the face
giving a comfortable fitting. Its effectiveness again depends on the number of layers
used in making.
 Cloth masks with filter: As cloth masks are claimed to be more fashionable, adding
a filter pocket to them makes it more effective for use. Adding a filter to a double
layered mask could increase its efficiency from 35% to nearly 70%.
 Disposable surgical masks: These flat thin masks are usually white and blue. They
can filter around 60% of inhaled particles. Intended to stop aerosols from entering,
they have shown significant reduction in the spread of infection. Although they are
meant to be used only once and disposed after wearing.
 N95, KN95 and other respirators: N95 masks are most efficient in protection
against the virus & other respiratory diseases. N95s filter out 95% of particles while
breathing, making it super safe. However it is in short supply and so it must be
reserved for healthcare professionals. KN95 masks are also rated to filter out 95% of
particles, made to meet NIOSH requirements as per China’s design standards.
However these masks may be fake and not meet the NIOSH requirements as per
CDC.
