1. We produce a 10-in.

-long bimetallic composite material composed of a strip

of yellow brass bonded to a strip of Invar. Determine the length to which each
material would expand when the temperature increases from 20°C to 150°C.
Draw a sketch showing what will happen to the shape of the bimetallic strip.
[α brass= 18.9 Χ 10-6 (°C)-1 ; α invar= 1.54 Χ 10-6(°C)-1 ]

2. A brass rod is to be used in an application requiring its ends to be held rigid. If the
rod is stress free at room temperature 20 0C, calculate the maximum temperature to
which the rod may be heated without exceeding a compressive stress of 172 MPa .
[For Brass : modulus of elasticity 100 GPa : α =20 ×10−6 ¿ 0C )-1]

3. A Nickel engine part is coated with SiC to provide corrosion resistance at high
temperatures. If no residual stresses are present in the part at 20 0 C, calculate the
thermal stresses (in psi) that develop when the part is heated to 1000 0C during use.
[α Ni = 13.0 × 10-6 (C0)-1 ; α SiC = 4.3 × 10-6 (C0)-1 ]
