G8 Unit 4 Art Summative

(Self-Portrait)
Eric
Artistic intention
The artistic intention, of course, was to represent myself with symbols. However,
as I went through the process, I chose to create a theoretical artwork because it
showed my perfectionist and logical identity. I wanted to apply different concepts
of mathematics into my artwork.
Inspirations
I was searching about the golden ratio, and I found a fact that a ratio of two
consecutive numbers in the fibonacci sequence get closer to the golden ratio as
the number increases. This reminded me of the significance of fibonacci sequence
in nature (ex. numbers of petals in a flower). This inspired me to apply this certain
concept into my artwork and develop with the concept in its basis.
Process

This is the process in my formative sketch. I

was trying to create an artwork an arrow on
the target to show a part of my identity: setting
a goal and following the plan towards the goal.
Proposal #1 (from formative assessment)
Following the process shown in the
previous slide, I created one sketch for
my formative assessment. This would
be my first proposal for my summative.
The colors and the shapes are made
rather perfectly in pattern, showing my
perfectionist identity. Plus, the sketch is
showing an arrow on the target, which
shows my goal-setting aspect of my
identity.
Process
This is my process of putting the squares
with their lengths matching the fibonacci
sequence (10px [pixels],10px,20px,30px,
50px,… to match 1,1,2,3,5,...). This builds
up to my second formative sketch and
second summative proposal, as well as
the basis of the idea I explore through my
later sketches.
Proposal #2 (from formative assessment)
The artwork represent my talent in
mathematics because the artwork is made
based on a mathematical concept. The artwork
is minimalistic and simple to match my ability to
simplify difficult and complex things. The white
color can also represent myself that is pure and
with various potential possibilities. I consider
one of my abilities as using the power hidden
behind the “white color” that is shown outside.
Therefore, this artwork with only patterns and
repetitions of white squares and large space
can represent myself in various aspects.
Process
This is my first summative sketch
and one of my various attempts to
develop my idea from proposal
#2. This artwork is mostly the
same thing as proposal #2, but
the position of the squares added
is different. The small square in
the center is in black to represent
things deep inside myself (my
potential abilities and talents).
This builds up to my last proposal
(in the last slide).
Process
This (2nd summative sketch) builds up also from
proposal #2, but I made two of the shape from
proposal #2 sharing the same two squares that are
the smallest. This is one of the results of my
exploration of how the idea from proposal #2 can
be expressed differently.

This (3rd summative sketch) is another result of

my exploration, with the biggest square in the
middle, and the same squares as proposal #2 is
repeated. The number of squares double up as
the squares get smaller, so there are more of the
smaller squares.
Process
The 4th summative sketch here is like a mix of
the 2nd and the 3rd summative sketches, with
two of the biggest squares and 2 of the smallest
squares shared in the rectangular shapes created
in proposal #2. Again, it’s just a part of the
exploration of ideas.

In the 5th summative sketch, none of the squares

are actually shared in the shape created in
proposal #2, but the smallest squares are just
next to each other. It doesn’t have a great
meaning, but I was trying to see the effect of
doing this.
Proposal #3

This is also the 6th summative sketch. I developed

this in a completely different way from my other
sketches. The squares are not added next to each
other, but they are added inside each other. It was
also just a trial of the brief idea that suddenly came
into my mind. The square in the middle can represent
myself deep inside. The other squares will represent
my physical ability shown outside. The white color
and simple shapes will also represent myself, as
explained in proposal #2.
Connections to the SOI (Statement of Inquiry)
The Statement of Inquiry for this unit is “Representation of self’s identity goes far
beyond the mere depiction of the physical information”. The artwork relates to this
because the portrait created is not just the look on the outside, but the symbolism
of characteristics and identity inside. The “physical information” is not the thing
that shows the whole identity. It might be just based on genetics. However, the
personalities and characteristics that don’t show up outside will actually be more
valuable because these come from the brain and therefore controls the person in
real life. To show the true identity, symbolism will be used to represent further than
just the physical information. For my self-portrait, it doesn’t include any picture of
myself in real-life. It’s merely shapes, colors, and lines repeated over and over, but
it shows my true identity and ability deep inside such as ability to simplify,
mathematical talents (plus interests), and my potential ability that is hidden. These
are not shown outside, but it’s important and deep inside myself.
Connections to Key and Related Concepts
The key concept is “Identity”. Self-portrait is a way to express myself and my
identity through an artwork. In this artwork, my identity (not the physical aspects
but the personalities) is shown through symbolism to represent myself (explained
in the previous slide).

The related concept is representation. Of course, in the artwork, representations

were the key to indirectly show my identity. I just had to use elements of art (lines,
shapes, colors, values) and principles of design (patterns, repetitions, and
proportions) to create a shape that will represent my identity. Each of the elements
and principles mean something that connects to my identity.
Connections to the Global Context and Exploration
The global context of this unit is “Identities and Relationships”. I had explained the
significance of identities in the artwork during the unit in the previous 2 slides. In
addition, the relationship can be between the personalities and the visual
elements. These two relate to each other, so that I could create the visual
elements to relate to the personalities and the potential identity of myself. As I
explained already in the previous slide, each element represents and relates to
one certain aspect of my identity.
The exploration is “identity formation”. We were consistently exploring deep into
how our identity is formed inside us and we reflected this on our artwork. My
artwork includes representations of my personalities, which are results of the
“identity formation”.
Proposal #4 (Final Artwork)
The 1st summative sketch is developed to
this final artwork. I added colors and values
to it to see the overall movement. The
smaller squares are colored darker. It
represents deep inside myself: my mind and
hidden abilities and talents. The colors are
just grey, which is white and black mixed
together. This adds to the simplistic aspect
of the artwork (not too many colors) and my
ability to simplify complex problems. The
value changes little by little in pattern to
show myself as a perfectionist. The 9 equal
squares at the right side is inside the
biggest square. This is actually suppose to
represent the rubik’s cube (while it does not
really like a rubik’s cube in the 2D artwork).
This will be an object to represent myself as
cube is like a problem to solve and I have
an ability to solve the problems logically.
