Making Slime and The Science

Behind It
Lillian Waddick
What is slime?

● Neither a liquid or solid

● Does not follow Newton’s law of
viscosity, meaning that temperature
does not affect it changing from
liquid to solid
● Viscosity is how slow or fast it moves
● Less runny slime means it is more
viscous
What is the chemistry behind slime?
● Polymers, which are long chains of molecules,
make up slime’s consistency
● Glue is the polymer in slime and the long
molecules slide by each other, making it more
runny
● Borax is the activator when making slime
● Adding borax create borate ions
● They ions link to the polymer molecules and
create cross linking
● Therefore, this makes it harder for the
molecules to slide by each other, making it
into a thick slime, rather than runny glue
Materials Needed
● Borax
● Shaving cream
● Soap
● Lotion
● White glue
● Clear glue
● Pot or bowl
● Spoon or something to stir with
