ASSIGNMENT # 2: WEEDS and HUMAN AFFAIRS

This assignment is designed to demonstrate how weeds affect man’s activities and
affairs. In sub-module 2, you have learned that man’s concept of plants being weeds is
based on how much it affects him negatively. However, there are plants that are also
regarded as weeds but man derives some form of benefit from them. For example, urai
or the Amaranthus weeds (Amaranthusspinosus and A. viridis) is popularly used as a
source of food. The young shoots are harvested and cooked either boiled or as an
ingredient of several vegetable dishes. It is known to contain high vitamins and
minerals.

For your task, you are to ask your parents, relatives, community elders, friends if they
know of any weed that is being used in your locality. You must interview 3 people
from your community to gather as much information as you can on how 3 weed
species are being utilized in your area. Include information on which part of the plant
is used, for what purpose and if there are certain preparations that are being done and
the considerations if any of their use. You are to write a report on your findings.
Include photos of your interview in your report. Once completed and submitted
you can earn as high as 15 pts for this activity. Please do remember that we will not
give you any points if you attempt to use information from the internet and pass it off
as something that came up from your interviews. The idea is for you to gain knowledge
from real life experiences of people that you know.
