Course Details

This module aims to provide a good technical and practical basis for the design of concrete structures. A wide variety of
topics applicable to real-world structural engineering problems are addressed, along with the underlying theory.
Students will be able learn about concrete designs methods outside of typical under-graduate courses, but important
for structural engineers.

GENERAL NOTES
Course Mr R. Walls - rwalls@sun.ac.za
coordinator: Office: S320H.
Lectures: One set of lectures of 4 hours will be given each week + 30min break
Venue: Either S202 or C201. See above for details for each week's venue.
Time: 12:30-14:30 & 15:00-17:00 each week.
Tutorials will be handed out each week. These will be discussed in class or outline solutions
Tutorials:
provided.

Mark Test - 35% weighting

allocation: Exam - 45% weighting
Oral presentation - 10% weighting. Students will do a presentation on a self-selected concrete
structure and explain technical details, analyses required, important load considerations and
code requirements.
The final mark for the course must be more than 50% to pass the subject. Students who fail
to attend an examination, test or oral presentation, without a valid sick note, will receive zero
for that section.
Registering for the course - External Students
Course cost: R6500 for external students (students must be registered for a post-graduate civil engineering
degree at another university and submit proof of this, as this is a student rate).
Registration: To register for the course you will need to fill out the SU PG Applicatiom form and pay the associated R100
registration fee, if you are not registered already. You need to provide proof of your postgrad civil engineering degree
registration with your home university together with this form.
o When paying the R100 registration fee, please reference MT13/811_YourSURNAME.

o Email the filled out form, proof of payment, and proof of home university registration to natalies@sun.ac.za
o This will allow you to be registered as a special student (so that your module credits can be recognised nationally at
the correct NQF level) and receive a SU student number.
o Once registered you will have to pay the course fee into your SU student account.
o Contact the course coordinator should you need further assistance.
Note: we unfortunately only have a limited number of positions available for external students due to our large
number of post-grad students so positions will be given on a first-come-first-serve basis.
