ASSIGNMENT # 02
Question # 01
Solution:
For 3 stages countercurrent operation:
Given data is:

Solvent=S= 160 cm3/s= 1.6×10−4m3/s

Mass flow rate of the solvent= 1.6×10−4m3/s × 800=.128kg/s

Volumetric flow rate of solution = 400cm3/s =4×10−4 m3/s

Lets assume :

Volumetric flow rate of A=a m3/s

Volumetric flow rate of B=(4×10−4-a) m3/s

Mass flowrate of A=1200a kg/s

Mass flowrate of B= (4×10−4-a) ×1000=(.4-1000a)kg/s

Thus overall:

Mass flowrate= (.4+200a)kg/s

Now for the concentration of solution we have:

Mass flowrate of A/ Overall Mass flowrate

=.1 1200a/ (.4+200a)=.1

After solving we get:

a= 3.389×10−5m3/s

Using value of a,we get :

Mass flowrate of A=.04067 kg/s

Mass flowrate of B=.3661 kg/s

Now ,Ratio of A in B is

Ratio of A/B= X f = .111 Kg/Kg

Slope of equilibirium line = (mass flowrate of B)/(mass flowrate of S)

=(.3661/.128)=2.86
Now using slope of line formula:

Y=mx+c

As we know (.1,.159)

Thus we get

C=-.127

Y=mx-.127

Thus using this formula ,

Now draw line of slope

=2.86

In such a way that it exactly gives us three stages.

When Yn+1 =Y4 =0 ; Xn =X3 =0.057 kg/kg

Thus the final composition of raffinate is 0.05 kg A/kg B

For multiple contact:
We have to find final composition of raffinate;

For this ,

Divide mass flow rate of solvent by number of stages which are 3

.128/3=.042Kg/s

This amount of solvent is fed to each stage :

Stage 1:

From the equilibirium curve the extract contains .18Kg A/kg S

(.18 x .0427)=.0076 kg/s A

NOW raffinate from stage 1:

R1=(.041-.0076)=.0334 kg/s A and .366 kg/s B

X1 =(0.0334/0.366)=0.0912kg/kg

Stage 2:

From graph the extract contains: 0.14 kg A/kg S

(.14 x .0427)=.0059 kg/s A

NOW raffinate from stage 1:

R2=(.0334-.0059)=.027 kg/s A and .366 kg/s B

X2 =(0.027/0.366)=0.0749kg/kg

Stage 3:

From graph the extract contains: 0.069 kg A/kg S

(.069 x .0427)=.0029 kg/s A

NOW raffinate from stage 1:

R3=(.0273-.0029)=.0244 kg/s A and .366 kg/s B

X3 =(0.0244/0.366)=0.06kg/kg

Thus the composition of final raffinate is 0.06kg A/kg B

Solution:
Ques tion # 02
Given data is :

Feed =50% of Acetaldehyde in water

Rn=5% Acetaldehyde,93% water,2%

solvent Procedure:

 First of all locate feed point at 50/50% of Acetaldehyde plus water.

 Locate Rn using 5 % of acetaldehyde .
 Lets assume 100% solvent is used.
 Draw a line from F to S ,then divide it into 2 equal parts as the equal flow rates of feed and
solvent are used and that point is M.
 Now pass Rn through M and meet it at E1 at equilibirum curve.

 Draw a line from F passing through E1 and also draw a line from Rn passing through S and
the point where both lines intersect is named as P
 Using the tie lines and point P,draw equilibirium lines successively untill you end up below Rn.
Calculations:

From the equilibirium lines drawn it is obvious that 4 theoretical stages are required:

Composition of E1:

33% acetaldehyde

65% solvent

2% water

Applying an overall balance to this countercurrent flow here:

1. F+S=Rn+E1=.05 kg/s

Applying an overall acetaldehyde balance here:

.5F=.05Rn+.33E1

From eq 1,put Rn=.05-E1 in above equation

After solving we get:

E1=.037Kg/s
