Course Description: Through guided listening in order to reach the orientation in musical, forms, historical
development and aesthetics.

Course Objective: The course is designed to broaden the student’s appreciation for music by teaching deep-
listening techniques. The class is focused on listening to enjoying and thinking about music. This class is a
survey of western music history from 400 BC to the 20 CE and music nowadays in the local.

The final grade is the combination of several parts, and the distribution is as follows:


10% Class Attendance
20% Concert report
10% Presentation
15% Midterm Exam
15% Course Packet 1
15% Final Exam
15% Course Packet 2

A 85 – 89
B+ 80 – 84

Class policies:

Late work will not be expected. All work will be due on the date assigned by the lecturer or no credit will be
given.
Instruction for all assignments must be followed or no credit will be given.
Attendance will be taken and you will be expected to follow the attendance policies of the University for 3
absent days without faculty's permission or students will not be allowed to sit in the final exam and will get F
for the course
Academic dishonesty will not be accepted on any assignment in this class. The policies on academic dishonesty
are clearly laid out in the Troy University hand book.

Etiquette: Cell phones must be switched off or to silent during class; no casual conversation in class and in
general act like adults and behave professionally. Violators will be asked to leave the class immediately.

Course Packet Usage

The Course Packet is designed to assist you through the class. The packet must be supplemented with you own
note taking from the lecturers as well as additional readings from books, documents. Please do not work ahead
in the packet. The instructor will let you know when to complete each section.

Each Course Packet is worth 15% of your final grade..


The Course Packet 1 will be due at the same time of the midterm examination.
The Course Packet 2 will be due at the same time of the final examination
The packet will be graded as follows:
 Completeness
 Accuracy of Answers
 Originality of Work (if the lecturer cannot prove academic dishonesty he may use this clause to diminish
a grade if the work is not distinct). This should encourage you to think about your work and answer the
best you can on your own and be creative with your answers.
