Respiratory System

What is the Respiratory System?

The respiratory system is a series of organs. Which is responsible for taking in
oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide. The main organs of the respiratory system
are the lungs, which carry out gas exchange.

Anatomy and Physiology of the Respiratory System:

The Respiratory System has two important functions:

 It brings in oxygen to our body which we need for our cells to live and
function properly.
 It also gets rid of carbon dioxide, which is a waste product.

The respiratory system consists of all the organs involved in the process of
breathing. This includes the:
 Pharynx
 Larynx
 Trachea
 Bronchi
 Lungs
The nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea and bronchi all work like a system of pipes
through which air is funneled down into our lungs where gas exchange occurs.
When you breathe, air enters your body through either your nose or your mouth. It
then travels down your throat through the Larynx and into the Trachea. These
organs help funnel fresh air into the lungs where gas exchange occurs.
It is important, because if the upper airway is not open, then breathing would not
be possible. It also helps to moisten the and warm the air before it reaches your
lungs.
The Lungs are paired, cone shaped organs which take up most of the space in our
chests alongside the heart. We have two lungs on each side of our body.
