In 1982, 48% of all of the traffic deaths were a result of alcohol-impaired crashes. This percentage has
gone down to 29% in 2018.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimated that the minimum drinking
age laws have been able to save 31,000 lives since 1975, and that it saved 538 lives in 2017 alone.

The tough enforcement of drunk-driving laws has been the main factor in reducing alcohol induced
driving deaths since the 1980s.

One effect of drinking is exaggerated behavior and loss of small-muscle control. This results in
reduced coordination, ability to track moving objects, and difficulty steering.
