Kazi Nazrul Islam(1899-1976)
• Birth place- Churulia village of Burdwan district in West Bengal
• Designation- poet, writer, essayist, journalist, musician, actor,
singer, radio artist
• Well known as rebel poet as well as national poet of
Bangladesh
•Was born in a poor family
•Early life: had to struggle a lot – worked as a teacher of a village
maktab, a custodian of a shrine of a saint, as a muazzin in a
village mosque, joined in a leto group.
•Studied up to class-10
•After that worked as a cook in a railway guard and a tea stall
• Nick name was ‘Dukhu Mia’
Literary activities:
• During 1st world war, Nazrul joined the Bengal regiment of British
Indian army(Ordinary soldier to havildar)
• Literary activities began when he was in Karachi cantonment
• Learnt Persian from Punjabi moulovi
• First prose work- Baunduler Atmakahini(Life of a vagabond),
published in ‘Saogat’- autobiographical work
• First poem- Mukti(Freedom)
• Was a joint editor of Nabajug with A. K. Fazlul Haque
• Subject of his works- revolution, oppression, exploitation, violence,
anti-colonialism, injustice, poverty, patriotism, peasants life
• Famous revolutionary poem- ‘Bidrohi’.
• Other works- Bhangar Gaan, Kamal Pasha, Agnibina, Proloyollash,
Anondomoyeer agomone, Dolonchampa,Chayanat
• Was arrested in 1922 for anti-colonial writings, arrested for a year,
went for 40 days hunger strike
• Rabindranath Tagore stopped it.
• In 1925, he joined in politics
• Organized ‘Sramik Proja Swaraj Dal’
• Was the chief editor of ‘Langal’
• In 1942, he became ill, lost his voice and memory till his
death(34 years)
• In 1972, he and his family were brought to Bangladesh
• His ‘chal chal chal’ was made the battle song
• During the liberation war, his patriotic song and poem
were aired by Swadhin Bangla Radio Station and freedom
fighters were inspired
• His Awards- Jagattarini award, Padmavushan award, D,lit.

• Citizenship was given in 1976
• Grave is near the mosque of Dhaka University
Jasimuddin(1903-1976)
• Birth place- Tambulkhana village of Faridpur
• Was a renowned poet and scholar of literature
• Well known as Rural poet or Palli Kabi
• Completed his education up to IA from Faridpur but B.A. and M.A, from
Kolkata University
• Started his career as a collector of folk literature while he was working as a
research assistant in Kolkata uniiversity
• Joined as a lecturer of Dhaka University
• Then in govt. dept. of information
• Wrote his famous poem- ‘Kabor’ when he was a college student
• The poem was included in school text book
• Subject of his works- freshness and natural beauty of rural world, ordinary
peasants, sincerity and simplicity of rural people, rural life.
• His first book of verse –Rakhali, Other famous books- Nakshi Kathar
Maath, Sojon Badiyar Ghat, Bangalir Hasir Golpo, Matir Kanna
• Was awarded D. Lit. from Rabindra Varati University
• Other Awards- Presidents awards for pride and performance, Ekushey
Padak, Swadhinata Dibas Purashkar, Bangla Academy award(Refused).
• Was buried in his village.
Zainul Abedin(1914-1976)
• Birth place- Kishoreganj, Mymensingh
• Was an artist of excellence visionary quality
• Pioneer of art and painting in this subcontinent
• Won a first class degree in art from Kolkata and studied art in
Slade school of art in London
• Was inspired by Brahmaputra river
• Famous for his sketch Great Bengal Famine of 1943.
• After partition he came to Dhaka and joined as an art teacher in a
school
• He and his friends convincing govt. started an art school
• Established govt. institute of arts and crafts which is now institute
of fine arts
• Was a visiting professor of Peshwar university
• Was given the title-’Hilal-I-Imtiaz’ by Pakistan govt.but refused it
• Awarded D.Lit degree from Delhi University
• was a national professor of Bangladesh
• Was given the title-” Shilpacharya’ in 1967
• Two of his famous scrolls-
Nabanno- about 1969 mass movement
Manpura’70 about the devastation of cyclone at Monpura Island
• He and 3 of his friends illustrated the constitution of Bangladesh
• Established Folk art museum at Sonargaon and Zainul Abedin
Sabgrashala at Mymensingh
• Characteristics of his painting- Black Line
• Famous Sketch- Famine Sketch, Two Faces, Painna’s Mother, The
Rebel Crow, Santal’s Return, Two Women
• Last Sketch- Two Faces. While he was lying on the bed of PG
hospital
• Died of Cancer
• Grave is in the DU campus
