THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF FOOD WASTE IN MALAYSIA

1. BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Food waste

 world's food system problems.

 described as any edible food material processed for human consumption but not
consumed.
 Lost or wasted at any stage of the supply chain, from initial processing to final
consumer consumption.
 Average Malaysian household throws out 0.5-0.8kg of uneaten food
 not only related with economic and environmental concerns, but it is also an
ethical issue

waste of food

 16,688 tons of food per day

 55 percent of solid waste disposed at landfills comprise food. The landfills space
in Malaysia is running out
 before MCO was enforced on March 18, 2020, food waste generated daily in
averaged 2.1 tonnes and in April, it went down to 1.7 tonnes a day which is
reflecting a 0.3- tonnes reduction in food wasted daily

2. PROBLEM STATEMENT
 Food waste in Malaysia surpassed 15,000 tonnes per day in 2015, including
3,000 tonnes that were held for consumption and should not have been
 Five major stages of the food supply chain
-agricultural production
-after harvest and storage
-food processing
-distribution
-consumption
 classified into three categories
-food losses
-unavoidable food wastage

-avoidable food wastage
3. OBJECTIVES

3.1. To examine trend of food waste in Malaysia.

3.2. To study the impact/implication of food waste to the environment.
3.3. To identify public health problem according to improper food waste management.
3.4. To identify the adverse effects of hazardous food waste such as biological, chemical
and physical.
3.5. To identify environmental problem effect of food waste that can affect health
problem.

4. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

 contribution of food waste to the environment especially in a harmonious,

multiracial country, always celebrating various festivals
 human consumption that is discarded after it has been held past its expiration
date or allowed to spoil.
 help creating awareness to prevent further destruction to the environment

5. LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

5.1. The area of study is within Peninsular Malaysia, and does not represent the whole
Malaysia which should include the East Malaysia.
5.2. Due to pandemic, data obtained through which available online, and it is lacking in
detail for example the amount of each type of wastes, specifically food waste.
5.3. There is a low frequency of research regarding food waste specifically and data
collected on food waste generation.
